Show A WOMAN SHOOTS HERSELF The Wound Not Fatal Particulars I ol the Affair At about half past 10 last night the j report of a pistol shot was heard in j front of a little house situated just I north of the Consol dated Implement I Companys establishment on First East Street and a woman fell to the ground exclaiming My God Im shot A crowd immediately gathered and the woman was carried into the l house The particulars of the affair as nearly as could be ascertained are as follows The injured woman whose name is given as Mamie Brock has been living liv-ing with her sister Mr P D Sprague formerly known as Laura Cornell at the house near which the shooting occurred Last night she asked Mrs Sprague to return a pistol which she baa loaned her but the latter declined to do so Mrs Brock then left the house and Mrs Sprague followed fol-lowed her to the gate where she handed her the pistol and a moment later the shot was fired the bullet entering the body below the left breast inflicting an ugly and painful wound Dr Burroughs came in and checked flow of blood Mrs Brock then asked to see her sister and when Mrs Sprague entered the room she cried Ive done it Laura but I regret it What made you do it asked Mrs Sprague 4 Because I was mad was the reply and this was tho only explanation she would give Upon the arrival of Dr Pinkerton who was summoned soon after the shooting an examination was made and the wound dressed The doctor says the bullet did not touch a vital Tf part and that the woman will soon re r cover The statement made by Mrs Brock in the presence of the reporters and others that she had done it but regretted re-gretted it leaves little doubt but that the shot was fired with suicidal intent although Mrs Sprague strenuously insists that it was an accident caused by the trigger of the pistol catching Mrs Brocks scarf Mrs Sprague says that her sister is the wife of George Brock who is now in Montana It is also stated that her mother was at one time the wife of Bill Hickman whom she left on account of illtreatment and married a man known as Spanish Frank who was killed at Stockton some years ago by Hickman Last winter Mrs Brock who is perhaps per-haps 22 years of age and rather prepossessing pre-possessing in appearance was arrested by the police at Mrs Eastons house on First East Street on the charge of prostitution but left 50 to secure her appearance and was seen no more At an early hour this morning she was resting easily |
