Show THE IDAHO TROUBLES I Oar specials from Idaho this morning morn-ing tell of the continuance of the exciting excit-ing state of effairs politically which has THE HERALD ngted in heretofett bgG worhin jn the t interest Couqty officers working 4JBC SIli Dabola lonili down vitti Wttt in ranta are scouring the country search of Mormon Democrats These latt ire men who have publicly and by letter withdrawn from the Mormon church and being no longer members of that organization have taken the test oath and registered as voters The object ob-ject of arresting these men is to prevent them from voting for Mr Hawley ruttier than to prosecute them for any crime or alleged crime for we cannot see how it can be claimed that they have violated any law There are somo strikingly peculiar statutes in the Idaho books but there is certainly none which prevents a person from withdrawing from a church association Foolhardy and reckless as soma of the legislatures in the Territory have been none has attempted at-tempted to say that having joined the Methodist Mormon or Baptist Cnurch the individual must forever be a Methodist Metho-dist Mormon or Baptist If a man concludes that he doesnt want to the longer be a churchman neither church nor tKe law can compel him to continue a member of the church There are ways out for him and the easiest and most expeditious way is to withdraw iust as these Idaho Mor wltuaraw jusi mons have done Nor does one have to be out a time on probation before he is really and entirely out He may have to get in by stages and degrees but getting oat is a matter of one act and the moment the membership ceases tne discontinuance is as complete com-plete as though the withdrawal had taken placa years before The wisdom or the propriety of these Idaho Mormons Mor-mons severing their connection with the church is la matter with which neither the courts tte lawnor the Republican Re-publican politicians have anything to do It is something which concerns only the parties themselves If the c latter are content we cannot understand under-stand why Mr Dubois should object especially as his chief object in life seems to be to destroy the Mormon Church and there can be no surer way of destroying it than by depriving it of members Tie law of Idaho declares that members mem-bers of a church which teaches certain things are not entitled to register and vote The Associate Justice of Idaho has decided that the Mormon church teaches those certain inhibited things and therefore that its members cannot exercise the right of suffrage If for I the sake of the elective franchise or for any other reason men choose to withdraw I with-draw from the Mormon church they i are no longer members of the pol litially tabooed organization or of any other which teaches forbidden practices prac-tices and they are therefore as much entitled to vets as though they had never been Mormons The law honestly applied cannot be made te run against them and it i3 to be hoped that none of these men will permit himself to be bulldozed out of his right to cast one free and fair vote by any threats of arrest ar-rest and prosecution THE HERALDS advice to those distressed j e ple is tte same that it always has been to violate vi-olate no law but obeying the law and abiding by its judicial interpretation by authorities maintain all the prope your rights to the bitter end |
