Show I The Long and Short Haul I WASHINGTON November 21The I Interstate Commerce committee today to-day began the hearing of complaints in the Standard Oil cases These are the complaints of George Rice of Marietta Mari-etta Ohio against a number of railroads rail-roads alleging discrimination in favor of the Standard Oil Company in violation viola-tion of the long and snort hanl provision provi-sion and against all unreasonable and unjust rates Fifty or sixty gentlemen wIre in attendance lawyers and witnesses wit-nesses The proc edings are likely to consume several days There are thirteen thir-teen case3 in all hut orlv ten of the cases are bring tried at tin tim J I Randolph Tu Ker Roger B Luumis al d A D Follet appeared lor the complainants com-plainants The railroads were represented rep-resented as follows S H Nobe and Ed Baxter for the Louisvile and Nashville hJ L Russell lor the Mobile Ohit Horn r JuninunpSr for the Newport News Mississippi Valley and the New Orleans Louisville Texas H B Mooney for the Mississippi Missis-sippi Tennesee and the Illinois Central Cen-tral Edward Fofston and Charles M Cst for the Cincinnati New Orleans Texas Pacific John p Blair and Thomas J Portis for the St Louis Iron Mountain Southern and William Baxter for the East Tennessee Virginia Vir-ginia Georgia The complaint against the Louisville Nashville was read in full and the points wherein it differed from the others was explained by Judge Loomis verbally The reply re-ply of the Louisville Nashville was also read A general denial is made of unreasonable charges and violations vi-olations of the long and shorthaul provisions pro-visions and the alleged discrimination is explained upon the theory that the Standard Oil Company furnishes ita own tank and cars while complainants ship in barrels in the companys cars thereby creating a substantial differ erence of circumstances and conditions condi-tions The case having thus been stated upon both sides counsel for the complainants com-plainants began reading depositions |
