Show HOUNDING THE HEBREWS The sons of Israel have of late generations genera-tions and we might say centuries been afflicted variously It has seemed to be the case that all sections of every community com-munity where the Aryan races prevail have felt it to be a part of their calling if not their duty contemn and treat with the most supreme disdain the Jew and his descendants A point was recently made by the New York Dramatic Hlrror with reference refer-ence to the stereotyped stage edition of the Hebrew in which it said among other things that that race from ancient times until now has been held up to ridicule and slander on the stage The miracle play of the middle ages was not a worse offender in this respect than is the dramatic en tainment of today With characteristic patience the Jewish element in the public than which it may bo said the theatre has no more intelligent or liberal class of patrons have long endured these jibes and insults without protest But now we are glad to say a strong sentiment is spreading spread-ing not only among the libelled race but alsoand this is more significantamong Christians which is destined to blot out of existence a feature that has disgraced many modern dramas The same authoritywhich certainly knows whereof it speaks whenever it speaks upon matters pertaining to its calling call-ing states with equal aptitude that the stage owes much to the Jew although the latter owes little to the stage RACHEL BERSHARDT and SOXXOXTHAL are a trio among many illustrious players given to the world by that persecuted race whilein the veins of KEAX the BOOTHS and other great actors coursed a strain of Jewish blood It is in no spirit of tolerance that the stage must do justice to the Hebrew character It is a right which every friend of the theatre whatever his race or nationality na-tionality should insist upon It has remained for an organization in this city which prides itself upon its caste its exalted tone its elevated temperament tem-perament and its altogether lofty standing stand-ing to give the Hebrew citizen the latest and most contemptuous as well as contemptible con-temptible blow by refusing to admit respectable re-spectable and upright Jews to its inner circle The reason for this is not stated but undoubtedly it is because the Mormonpho bia with which the club is surcharged has become so rank and farspreading that the concern cannot now tolerate any form of organized religious sentiment But it is quite probable that those whom they cast out and set aside can get along in someway some-way at least it is hardly to be presumed that there will be any begging for reconsideration recon-sideration |
