Show GOING TO MEXICO The New York Mall and Express has I found something else as a basis for a combined attack on the Mormons and the Democratic party It is a dreary Novemberlike day when the Jf and E cannot find something mean to say about a communify concerning which it knows less than pretty nearly any other newspaper in the country Its present cause of distress was found in the telegram published last week to the effect that the Mormons were preparing for a grand rush into Old Mexico having hav-ing acquired the title to large tracts of land in the State of Chihuahua The I paper named say 1 It is nothing new fo f hear tint the Mormons Mor-mons are contemplating move to MeXICo or at least the foundation there of a lage colony to which in case of a more rigorous rigor-ous persecution the Utah saints may retire re-tire Such a scheme was much talked of two or three years ago but it apparently came to nothing Now the report is revived re-vived It appears thit tbe Church of Jesus Christ 01 Latter Day Saints has lately been acq niring a good deal of prop ny I I in Mexico in the State of Chihucnua This sand has been purchased from private parties and the Mexican government does not seem to have been at all concerned In the transaction mere can be little doubt that the Mormons exec to use tins property pro-perty as 1 foundation lor a colony but it may be doubted whether they intend to remove re-move thither in a body It would be a good scheme for them to ship off the polygamists polyg-amists to Mexico aud keep only monogamIsts monogam-Ists at Salt Lake Then the Mormon leaders lead-ers could claim that they are just as good Citizens of the United States as anybody and that they ought to be entirely let alone and if this claim should be allowed as no doubt it would be by a great many unthinking un-thinking people they would proceed to get admission for Utah as a State and then make whatever laws they p eased on the Bubjest of polygamy or anything else We do nt 8 < y that this is the Mormon tcnem0 but itis not at all unlikely that they will t y something of ttiis sort before long especially if Democrats remain in power at Wastungtn This removal of Mormons to Mexico is a piece of standing news Every litle while it is promulgated Under startling headlines as if it were a new discovery and something very important Itis commented upon editorially and in tha case of newspapers newspa-pers like the Mniland Express viciously It seemingly does little good to deny the oftrepeated story and to show that it i is largely the work df imaginative reporters re-porters and correspondents It has little or no effect to prove that the Mormons Mor-mons are not removing from Utah in large bodies that they are not purchasing pur-chasing vast tracts of land in our sister sis-ter republic and that they are not forming extensive colonies in Mexico The same old lies ara repeated every few weeks just as if they were new and just as if their falsity had not often been exposed THE HERALD cannot speak for the i I r Mormon Church but it will not be denied I I de-nied that this paper with its eighteen years existence here is somewhat familiar fa-miliar with the people of Utah and knows something of what is going on among them If there were anything like a hegira contemplated THE HERALD would be quite as likely to know as much about it as a Topeka newspaper reporter or a Washington correspondent We have said it before bat will repeat it hereat the same time expecting to I see the removal to Mexico boomed with the usual rrgularity that a Mormon hegira to Mexico has not set in and that one is not likely to be inaugurated I Utah is a better country every day in the year than Mexico and the Mormons Mor-mons know it Utah is largely owned by Mormons and whatever else the I Saints may ba they are not fools and idiots they know a good thing when they see it and being human are not above doing the best they can for themselves them-selves they are not in the habit of deliberately f de-liberately working against their best r interests or with their eyes open act ac-t cepting the worst side of a bargain f They ale not the kind of people to voluntarily I vol-untarily leave comfortable homes I peace plenty and prosperity and go into a wilderness which they know in advance pan never be made to equal r what thsy leave behind And above r all they are art going to indulge in expatriation l Ii ex-patriation there being too great love t for the stars and stripes and too t much faith in its protecting folds M The Mormons have a way of thinking the same ai a gool many Gentiles I think that Utah is one of the best f spots on topcf earth and that the t t i government of the United State is as near to perfection as anything the world has developed in that line and while they think in this way they will not indulge in hegiras to any marked extent When they leave Utah it will be when there is a better country to go to and will the editors who are so much exercised about this removal tell us where that country is to be found But this Mexican business is simply the rank aid musty chestnut reopened re-opened |
