| Show ASPIRATIONS DASHED I An amusing and withal very serious story comes from Oakland California Miss Lilly F Brown being the somewhat some-what romantic heroine Miss Brown had observed that widows were about the freest and jolliest members of her sex that they wore not hedged about and hampered by the restrictions which society wound around spinsters that asa as-a rule they were attractive in the eyes of men and in plain words could have lots of fun without destroying their characters Having observed all the e things and concluded that she didnt want to wait the slow process of time in freeing her from a husband aud making her a widow Miss Brown sought a physician and stating her case to him asked that he would arrange ar-range a marriage between her and one of his male patients who was about to take his departure for the golden whence The doctor had such a patient pa-tient on his hands one Frank McKee a young printer who was in the last stages of consumption and who would probably not outlive the marriage ceremony cere-mony a week The young fellow was willing to accommodate the lady and she was therefore immediately made Mrs Frank McKee Being wealthy she undertook to make the last days of herhusband as comfortable as possible and to this end supplied all his wants and provided him with tender nursing Remarkable and unfortunate as it may seem instead of dying promptly McKee i at once showed signs of improvement and underthe improved care and generous gener-ous treatment he waxed fat and grew strong As he got better his wife grew worse and as the days strung out into weeks her heart grew faint and sick Finally Frank found strength to visit her in her elegant home where he went to claim the rights of a husband but she did not see things in that light and had him thrust forth as a mendicant and vagabond She had married to be s widow not a wife and she didnt propose pro-pose that nature should interfere with her plan At this stage the matter rests She cant go into weeds and indulge in-dulge in the frolics and fascinations of a widow she will not be a wife and has deprived herself of the freedom of maidenhood She would like toy bring snit for divorce but her husband will give her nonsause Its a sad case indeed in-deed |
