Show w U til J 4ass 1IodLJr TILE REFO1 SCROOL The Commissioners fietnrn From heir Eastern Trip J H MoyleEsqM who left this city aa ajl6tiiJec Ja jHirpo3e of visiting visit-ing The largo reform schools in Hie i east in company with Messrs Barton and Jones the other members of the Reform School l C Commission returned home on Saturday evening The gentlemen visited the reform schools at ChicaO Lansing Michigan Milwaukee Mil-waukee Pontiac 111 Rochester New York City Philadelphia Baltimore Washington Cincinnati St Louis and elsewhere The methods employed were carefully studied and much valuable val-uable information obtained Mr Moyle was particularly im prfssedwith the mannerPin which the school at Lansing is managed It is a large school and is conducted upon what 11 called thy cottage system There are several buildings and fifty inmates are confinedi in each One half of the day is devoted de-voted to study and the boys are empoyed in the various workshops the balance of the day While the discipline dis-cipline is strict there is nothing that savors of thu prison moral suasion being employed in preference force nd the effect is very beneficial upon the youths confined in institution A large reform scnool in New York City is managed by Catholis the boys being under tho charge of the priests while the girls are under the care of nuns the institution is i supported by tho State There is a similar school Baltimore and both give entire satisfaction satis-faction Mr Moyle says that there is a decided tendency do away with the prison features formerly in general use and which still exist to some extent ex-tent The commissioners will make a report to the trustees at an early day and it is thought that work on the building which is to erected in Weber County will be cbuimenred MI a short time |
