Show THE NEWS OF NEPHI An Illustration of the Effects of Enterprise J THE QUARTERLY CONFERENCE Improvements Present and Prospec live The Chances for n Big Future Fu-ture for the Burg The changes which have taken place in Nephi within the last decade or within the last few years are truly encouraging en-couraging and they show how impotent impo-tent is the idea that our Utah towns are without wealth and without resources re-sources I am one of that claw who have considerable faith in the virtue of the socalled American boom or in welldirected enterprise as it tends to break down apathy opens up wider possibilities for the human mind and heart dissipates inordinate fear materializes that which people have around them and last and most important of all it should have the effect of encouraging and ennobling labor J In the light of WHAT HAS BEEN DONE in some of our towns there is no excuse for persons with equal resources to say that II I have nothing to do I have hands to work but no work to b done I have a mind to plan but no object to shape or scheme to crystal izt I am without work almost perfnni ally and my non progression seems to be chronic Such a oue should look around and tee what possibilities lie within reach see what other towns and other communities ha e done and then take courage Of course what is true of the individual in this sense is true of a community and if their town is not I nro A lug if it is not forcing onward it is an incumbent duty for them to make a start to stand together and worK unitedly for the general good and for the puolic weal Nor can people individuals in-dividuals expect to achieve much unless they are up early in the morning as it were and helping by dint of actual work to make their town and themselves them-selves better both morally and finan oially And wnen this is done how much better they will feel They will look upon their work in much the same way as does the man who has overc mea me-a great weakness or a vicious appetite They hill take joy in their accomplishments accomplish-ments and sense of wonderment will come upon them that THEIR EXTRA EFFORT has been able to achieve so much Dr 0 W Holmes has aptly said that It is a faitha genuine enthusiasm for something some-thing good that makes a life worth looking at And this is eminently applicable ap-plicable in a world whose vaccilltttion and change is the oroer of lha day hoth in a temporal and a spiritual sense bat having mentioned the propriety of action and a resuscitation of physical phy-sical and mental life what can be done to help many of oir towns which are said to have got their growth The methods are numerous though 1 would not by any means assume to dictate as to which are the very nest In many or our towns however there arc excellent facilities for manufactories manufac-tories in others rock quarrying anti coal mining ought to be carried on to avery a-very great extent At Fountain Gm for instance they have one of the best sites for a woolen mill and patent roller dour mill in tlie westoa beautiful large stream of water issuing from the mountains side within a mile of the town and situated in one of the richest agricultural and sheep raising counties ol the country At Manti and at Glenwood too they have similar sites Outside of these sections however there are other towns that are not overly blessed with abundant natural resources but which might like Nephi taKe hold of the spirit of progress as indicated in the opening paragraph of this letter and in spite of the grumblers and soreheads go on to SUCCESS AND INFLUENCE without thought of discouragement or an unsuccessful outcome In the matter of minor improvements improve-ments but still very importantmight be mentioned the idea of aesthetics oran or-an improvement in the architectural and contoural appearance of our towns and cities The same progress and enterprise however which would add to the material wealth of a town would in most cases help its architec tural appearance In this connection however it is peculiar to note what an effect one nice aesthetic residence or building in a town will have upon the people This as your correspondent I has had occasion to note is especially true in the recently built towns of Kansas Kan-sas Missouri and throughout the whole range of towns lying between Nashville and Montgomery Mobile too since the war has taken on a new impetus for tasty building and it seems that in larger cities as well as in smaller towns I where one starts earnestly and taste I fully the idea becomes infectious and all in response to spirit of public comity seem to be in duty bound to do i something iTO i I TO EXEMPLIFY THIS PRINCIPLE however it is not necessary to go faraway far-away from home In the little city of Malad Idaho a good architect located less than six years ago He drew i the plans for a nice tasty court house and one er two residences Nov the town is blessed with as pretty little residences resi-dences as one would wish to see What is true of Mulad is measurably true of Nephi where the work of Architect J G Robinson and the enterprise of Mr Lunt and others is giving an impetus to building but this principle I like all other principles of truth is not I Bounded by geographical lines and it I will be found to work as well in Utah as in Kansas or Alabama in Sanpete at in 82 alt Lake i COSFEKESCE
