Show NO MORE SlATJSS After much and spirited discussion which ranged far beyond the matter in I hand the Senate has passed tho bill providing for the admission into the Union as a State of the southern portion por-tion of Dakota The labor on the bill however is lost and all the time given up to it has been wasted All the Republicans Re-publicans in the Senate voted for the measure and all the Democrats against it This action Is fair notice to the Dakotans and the country that the House which contains a Democratic majority will kill the bill and the Territory Ter-ritory will continue a dependency at least during the present session if not during this Congress The vote on this bill is an emphatic verification of the truth of the charge that politic and not jusiise and right controls in the admission of new States South Dakota has a population above 250000 or more than any one of four or five of the old States It is rich in natural resources and its people are asa as-a rule welltodo being in better cir financially than the average in any State in the Union They are progressive energetic and ambitious Their ability to maintain a State government gov-ernment cannot be called iu question and no one doubts that the people are desirous of having their rIghts as citizens citi-zens of the United States nor will anyone claim that the Dakotans Da-kotans are not ash loyal and as devoted to the Union as < others It so happens hO6ver that the majority of th ° m are Republican Repub-lican in their political belief nl affiliation affilia-tion and because of that faot and for no other reason insy must be held as subjects and kept out of their rights as freemen If thoy were Democrats the vote in the Senate would have been reversed just ai it will be reversed re-versed when the Democratic New Mexico comes forward with her appeal for admission Both houses of C con greg must be under the control of one political party befora a new Scats can be created or else tin Territories must be admitted by piira so that neither of the national parties will ba give i the advaut s se in Congress The vote on this bill should so discourage dis-courage the other Territories as to cease them to abandon their efforts for Statehood during tbe present C mgress If Dakota with everything in its favor and its aoundant qualifications cannot be admitted there is lttle hope for the other dependencies |
