list of select committees i tnpcitott Felation with Canada I Senator Hoar said it was useless beblind 1 1I 1i 1I I i I to tho fact and that no discretion was required re-quired as to it that there was a large and rowing boy of men Canada that desired annexation to the United States but nobody proposed to accomplish it without the free and intelligent and instructed will of the people of both countries POKING AROUND Senator Cullom did not think there would be too much investigation into the relations existing and to exist between the United States and Canada ala He very much desired such investigation and such progress should be made as would ultimate in the two countries becoming one Senator Sherman favored the committee He did not believe with the longstretching border between the two countries could lang continue in peace There would be a great nation springing up t the north of tho United States and that fact would necessitate ne-cessitate a standing army on each side form which would endanger the republican of government He hoped some day for a union as a popular increment of both peoples WOULD NOT COMMIT HIMSELF Senator Edmunds said he would vote for a standing committee but with the reserve that the vote would not commit him to favoring the annexation or political union That step once taken would bo indissoluble Senator Merrill said he was quite willing to have a committee appointed as it afforded an opportunity for steam to be blown off on the question He regarded the whole agitation on the subject as preposterous as there never had been a time when Canada was more loyal to Great Britain than now HE WOULDNT HAVE IT Senator Blair disclaimed the inferences to be drawn from the remarks of the Vermont Ver-mont senators that New England was not in favor of political union Senator Frye spoke of the necessity of obtaining commorcial and other statistics but declared any movement on the part of the United States looking towards annexation annexa-tion would be a profound mistake and would only retard After further debate Senator Payne withdrew the motion and all select committees com-mittees won agreed to and the Senate went into executive session and confirmed the nominations of Messrs Palmer Swift Washburne and Tickenor and soon after adjourned THE GREAT WEST The following arc western members of committees named namc Claims
