Show THE OLD OMAN 1 Allen G TJmrrusn has long sinco achieved his highest success and stands foremost among American state menThe men-The graceful act of the convention can confer farther honor upon him but it has conferred the honor upon itself The VicePresidency is a position which younger and more ambitious men might strive to attain as a stepping stone to a higher office which might be made vacant by the death of the incumbent who occupies it by the choice of the people Mr Thurman can have no such expectation nor can he have any desire that the cares of that office shoulu devolve upon him His place will be to preside over the Senate with a dignity which will be a welcome contrast to the boorishness of his predecessor It is safe to say that he will never resign the chair for the purpose of descending into the arena to bandy coarse epithets with a political opponent and thathe will not countenance such dicplays of forensic barbarism as have recently disgraced what was once body of potent grave and reverend seignors We congratulate the whole country and especially the United States Senate Sen-ate on the nomination which is equivalent to the election of the favorite father of Ohio |
