Show 1n LITZ1UiL indications that more or There aro less sidewalk paving will be done in thi summer There is a city during the popular demand for the improvement and for once a majority of the property certain prominent street owners along favor the work The talks which TH lot HKEALD held with many of the South Temple Street or owners along demonstrated that at Friday morning least as regards the north sidewalk of thoroughfare there will that popular be little opposirion to the laying ef a substantial walk from the Utah Central depot a mile and a half east It is not likely that formidable opposition to improving the side will be presented walks along East Temple and First and Second South There is no lot on any of the streets named which would not be increased in value much more than the cost of the Improvement It remains re-mains for the City Council to take the necessary action and order the woik to proceed The public will applaud and the owners of the land bjnefitted by the improvement will not disapprove But in this connection there is a matter mat-ter which should be considered and that is the question of material In Thursdays HERALD one gentleman suggested cement as preferable it being somewhat cheaper than sandstone sand-stone and in Ins opinion more lasting Others favor the coal tar asphaltum on the score of economy but we have not heard its durability commended We dont think it should be considered as in competition Some urge sandstone flagging and allege that it is more lasting last-ing than the cement hough not per hap3 as ornamental and costing somewhat some-what more but as to this latter there is a question With its present information Tar HEBALD is decidedly in favor of the material sandstone as above any other proposed As to its durability there can be no question It has been demonstrated de-monstrated by actual use that under the busiest traffic of the city it will show comparatively little wear in a quarter of a century On a residence street like South Temple it will not wear out in a hundred years and we doubt that cement will last longer Jut there is one controlling consideration I the fact that sideration and that is I sandstone ia home material while the cement is an importation Sandstone labs in any desired width length and thickness may be obtained right here at home and all the money which they east including the quarrying cutting transportation and laying will go to our own people and be circulated in the community If cement shall be used all of the money which the sidewalks cost that will be expended here will be for the wages of the few men who lay the walks Of the eight dollars a barrel which the cement costs the railways and ship companies will get fully threefourths for transportation trans-portation Ills a very good policy to keep money at home when it can be done and in this instance it strikes us that it will be most unwise to send the cash abroad In all probability the city will expend not less than I 125030 for sidewalk improvements this year If the sandstone flagging which abounds hereabouts in such abundance shall be used every dollar of this money will be retained at hems but if cement be used fully ninetenths of the cash will be sent away to make business for and help the industries of other lands and peoples |
