Show I I 1 ENCOURAGEMENT FROM WASHINGTON I i WASH-INGTON I 1 I I The Philadelphia American says I i I I + Evidence accumulates that the Utah I movement towards Statehood has encouragement i encour-agement rrom Washington The Saints talk witn great confidence ofF the prospects of j i their new constitution Forte nrst time l t I in a quarter of a century they feet that they J t I have friends in high places All this maybe i may-be mere presumption on their part But the situation is very tempting to the Democrats and before Mr Cleveland was inaugurated E we heard rumors of such a policy in the air If we were among his unfriends we could I j wish for nothing better How his orthodox I I g white adherents at the South will enjoy t reading the message in which he proposes I L I the admission of a polygamous state into i the Union I L I It is hardly necessary to remark that 3a t the American is a Republican organ otherwise it would not make the assertion I j asser-tion it does without giviug proof of theY I the-Y fact alleged We have all been looking M rya J f for that encouragement from Washington Wash-ington the evidence of which is accumulating j j ac-cumulating but so far have failed to I 1 L discover it and will be greatly obliged American if it will indicate to the anything I I any-thing which can be construed into evi I 1 d nee of encouragement from the national i is na-tional capital It is encouragement of j j I that kind that we want and which we 1 have the right to expect and if the j American has any evidence that the Statehood movement is receiving or I I j will receive encouragement from Washington I j Wash-ington the newspaper will greatly encourage en-courage us by revealing the fact i r There is no good rson why the I j I 1 movement should not tceiv encouragement j i encour-agement and assistance from Washington I 1 Washing-ton or the administration as the 6 American implies The movement is I 1 a wise and eminently proper one It I I I I r intern plates the enfranchisement of a numerous and thrifty community cf I J j I I I Americans it proposes the removal of j I the political disabilities from thousands i of loyal Americans who have broken i 1 3 1 I i II I 1 j I i II tl IIr no law and have always been honorable honor-able upright lawloving and law abiding devoted to their country and its institutions it has fonts object the creation of an American State which will be the pride of the west the purpose pur-pose of the movement is to get rid of the Territorial serfdom which is retarding re-tarding our industrial social and political po-litical progress and having unloaded the weight which is keeping us back and dragging us down move forward with strides which will excite the wonder and admiration of the Union Nobody need be ashamed of lending I this Statehood movement encouragement encourage-ment On the contrary all fair minded just people will be glad to do what they can to help lift distressed and troubled Utah out of the mire into which she has been trampled Especially should we receive encouragement from the administration ad-ministration which is presumed to work for the best interests of the people of the United States We all sincerely hope the American is speaking the truth when it claims there is evidence accumulating that the Administration will hep the Statehood scheme If the Washington authorities are always found working for so commendable a cause as the securing of Statehood for Utah and the enfranchisement of the people of this sorely afflicted Territory they will be ever above censure and criticism which can injure |
