Bassett of New Haven Arrested NEW HAvEN Conn May 25The officials of the Merchants national bank are still reticent and positively decline t give out the names of the merchants who have benefittod by dishonest discount ing practices This action h created the impression that they are shielding promi nent business men who have been in eel lision with Cashier Bradley and Teller I Pall r The bank officials now admit the loss t be fully SW000 and it may possibly eat up their entire I surplus of 100000 The feeling is sprcadin that the bank is crippled more than it care I to acknowledge With the exception of 17000 worth of notes discounted by John E Bas3etthardvare icerchaatjthejrablic at sea as to who has been bcnehlted by the crooked work As a result of the action ac-tion by the United States authorities Bas sett was arrested this afternoon charged with aiding and abetting Palmer in the embezzlement em-bezzlement of the banks funds His bail was fixed at 3jOQ which was furnished When Bassett returned to his store he found the sheriff in waiting who attached the store and stock to the amount 550000 at the instance of the bank The marsha next arrested the cashier and teller Brat ley for fraudulent reports to the comptroller comp-troller of the currency
