Show 11 1 P I JUDGE BARTLETT in New York has j just rendered a decision in a life insurance 4 11 insur-ance case which is of interest everywhere t i I every-where The policy holder did not have r 1 j i money to pay the premium when he t I i7 t 1 yielded to the solicitations of the agent P and therefore gave his promissory note I L j for the amount which was accepted by l 1 the agent Before the policy was delivered E t livered however and the note paid the II Insured died The company the New i York Life refused to pay the policy i holding that the premium had not been i paid and that the agent had exceeded js his authority in accepting the note r i Judge Bartlett has decided in favor of I the company The law may be sound f I but the equity of the case isnot with i I the company The solicitations of the agents amount almost to bulldozing many men insuring without knowing i I know-ing definitely what they are doing They have only a mesgre idea of tbe 1 1 f arrangement and are dolefully igno I T I j 1 rant of the complex conditions to which they commit themselves The agent talks them into it and they rely upon him to protect them whereas he is working for a company and not for the insurer and will see that his employer has the advantage every time It is unfortunate that the law does not interfere in-terfere to hold the companies to a stricter responsibility for the acts of agents |
