Show FLYING ARTILLERY Captain Ferris Company Called Out to Stop the Fight MRS HARRISON IS FOR KILRAIN r And She Show Oood Judgment The Sheriff of St Tammanys Parish and Governor Nichols In Bud Kenauils Saloon NEW ORLEANS July 5A E Ferris adjutantgeneral of tho state militia arrived n New Orleans this afternoon and was 4 driven post hast to the office of Captain A I Behnam commander the Louisiana artillery and ordered Behnam t call out his company to prevent the Sullivan Nil rain fight in the state of Louisiana The Sheriff of St Tammany L Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW ORLEANS July 5It is not improbable improb-able that there may be some misunderstanding misunder-standing and friction between the governor and tho sheriff of St Tammany about the fight The governor in his proclamation said that the matter was one entirely for the sheriff and local authorities and called I upon them to do their duty threatening to eport them to the legislature if they failed 10 do it The sheriff has assumed responsibility res-ponsibility but the view he takes in regard to it indicates that he is not going to interfere inter-fere with tho pugilists During the past week a largo amphi theatre capable of seating several thousand thous-and person has been erected near Abita for the bullfight to come off there tho day before the prize fight Tho religious people peo-ple denounced bull fighting a immoral and mproper They tried to stop the building of tho amphitheatre but ailedand then appealed ap-pealed to the sheriff and town marshal mar-shal to stop the bull fight itself Sheriff Cook has declined to do so on the ground that bull fighting is not against the laws of Louisiana Ho will visit the ring and protest against the fight but he will not interfere I is argued on this basis that if he will not stop the bull fight on the ground that it is not against the laws of Louisiana he will similarly decline to stop tb > > rize fight which also is not prohibited ot MO law and if Sheriff Cook makes up iiis mind that there is no law to prevent a prue fight ho is likely to stick to that view lih eg bikdU eat10 whether the governor thinks differently or not The general belief here to day is that the fight itself will not be interrupted but that the principals to it will be arrested afterward af-terward on a charge of breach of the peace and assault and battery on each other charges that are not likely t amount to much The people of Abita and St Tammany many waut the tight to take place there and likely to vigorously an attempt are lkely oppose any atempt of tho officers to stop it i Mrs Harrison Wishes Kilrain Success I Special to THE HERALDExaminer Dispatch CINCINNATI July 5The full details of the difficulty between the Babies McKee I ng on the same train with Kilrain suggests sug-gests tho possibility that the presence of the slugger exercised some evil influence I Baby McKeos sister had been playing with I a heavy cane and had claimed exclusive pro rietorship and the little ones quarrelled lu a sudden fit of anger the boy raised the cane and brought it down on little Marys head knocking her down Then Benny lost all interest m the cane and seemed to regret his victory as ho stood with downcast down-cast eyes and watched the doctors attend her lhen when the little lady laid her head on the grandmothers lap tno repentant ant lad throwing his arms around his sis tars neck sobbed with her and tried to kiss away the effects of his blow and their teals joining the breach was healed Then Dr Dougherty was introduced to the mem oers of the party and Mrs Harrison atonce evinced a strong desire to be told all about Kilrain Dr Dougherty painted him as the modest man and loving Husband and as the Irani drew up at Deer Park Mrs Harri sons parting wishes were Well if hois that kind of a man I most sincerely hope tie will win The Talk i New Orleans Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch1 NEW ORLEANS July 5The interest in f the approaching fight between John L Sul van and Kilrain is at fever heat in this t ity and it promises to be still warmer before be-fore Monday when they must meet accord aA to articles of agreement within 200 miles of New Orleans and decide the question i ques-tion of superiority Both sides have bitter i supporters and hot words have been passed but so far little money which should show the current of public sentiment is in favor of Sullivan What threatened to boa free fight came very near taking place in Bud Ucnauds office When the Sullivan party were cross ug Pear river Just below the station of that name about sixty miles from New Orleaus the attention of everybody was attracted by a hugo poster placed prominently promin-ently on the wall of tho small station announcing an-nouncing Grand prize light between Juko Kilraiu and J L Sullivan for the championship of the world l Charley Johnson and Wakely became pale with rage which was unbounded when they reacned the Crescent City and found tho posters which bore the name of a New York printer who is known to be putting up money for Kilrain displayed everywhere every-where Johnson and Wakcly set out in search of Frank Stevensoa alter they had seen Sullivan safely housed at U3 Hjnipart street in the cosy home of John Dully a another of Patsy Duffy who will bo remembered re-membered as the Southerner who was gong go-ng to putdaylightthrocgh Fred May in a Broadway resort one eveninga year or two aga because ho said he had mind to invite Mrs Langtry to tako dinner with him at Deliaomco They found Kilraius Delncos Kiraius representative sentative at Ucuauds office at No 2 Caron dalet street and there was no mincing of words What in h do you mean was John stools salutation Do you want your man to Ugh t or are you merely advertising anand his backerl A What do you mean was Stevensons rply in a rising voice Yes what do you meant continued Johnston You had every opportunity tohave this fight come off peaceably you had the best and most lenient governor in tho United States to deal with the police were friendly to dea polce frendly t you and d n it there you go and openly defy them by issuing a lot of posters for a prizefight prize-fight which is itself a breach of the peace You dont want t fight and youre trying to smooth a way t get out of it In getting your printing done in New York you slap in tho face every printer in Louisiana Our man will be here and he will fight was Stevensons response Now to show that we are sporting men con nued Johnston we will do away with LaO gaLe money Wo will take a dozen men on each side and a special train for which we will pay and will go where wo can have it oub for 810000 a side with or without a referee We will accept any body that is known at all or we will fight with nobody acting in that capacity I aWe want to f ht and everything is all right replied Stevenson rght repled Stvenson For my part sad Bud Renaud shall I do everything in my power t have the fight decided on the date agreed upon Aleck Brewster who has been so prominently prom-inently mentioned i as referee and whoso selection would give general satisfaction y has put this out of the question by starting on a long yacht crnise not to end until after the fight Sullivan is a great favorite in the beating in fact it is very difficult to place any money except at two to one on the Boston boy and not many persons care to do that In the St Charles Turf exchange this evening the proprietor after vainly endeavoring to sell a pool on the fight of I fercd to bet Sl000 that Kilrain would win Captain Jack Galvin exchief of police of I New Orleans tried to put 1800 on Sullivan Sulli-van to day but after peddling O of it against 0 in hundred dollar lots he became be-came disgusted The Young Mens Gnmastc disgste is a rich organization I 160000 worth of property They owning i faofdt Ri ofdta h are for Sullivan to a man and want the Southern Athletic club men t come to the j front and show the color of their money I Kilrain Leaves Cincinnati CINCINNATI July 5 Kilrain and party left this morning on the regular train for i New Orleans on the Queen Crescent route There was a goodly number of peo pie at the station to see the party depart Sullivan llxercises In New Orleans Snlvn New OMEAXS July 5Thb friends and admirers of Jake Kilrain were disappointed by the announcement this morning that he had missed the connection at Cincinnati Among the many who saw Sullivan at the Young Mens Gymnastic club rooms yesterday were not a few of the friends of Kilrain actuated by a desire to see the man against whom Kilrain is to stand Some of the best informed of these men vent away well satisfied and Kilrain gained quite a number of friends The odds are still largely in favor of Sullivan in the pool rooms but this is probably owing to the nonarrival of his adversary Sonic of the latters cohorts say that their man will in no wise suffer in comparison with Sullivan but on the contrary con-trary will show up in much better form The programme as regards Sullivans transfer to Spanish Fort has been changed He is still quartered on Kampart street opposite op-posite the Young Mens Gymnastic clubrooms club-rooms A large crowd has been congregated congre-gated in the vicinity ever since daylight They appeared to be contented to watch the brick and mortar which surrounds their hero of the hour At 1030 Sullivan Muldoon and Cleary proceeded to the Gymnastic club rooms where the big fellow was put through bIf severe exercise in catching and throwing a large ball weighing twentyfive pounds dumb bell practice wrestling and rope skipping Sullivan showed himself to be in perfect condition and his 1ather protruding pro-truding stomach has been reduced somewhat some-what and be showed up in better form than on his lirst appearance in the gymnasium gym-nasium He tired out both of I s trainer3 but showed not the least fcvidenee of fatigue or distress Cobum and other pugilists at the St Charles are unanimous 1 their opinion that Sullivan will win During Sullivans exercise today a football foot-ball filled with four or meal and veijrhing twentyfive pounds was tossed from Sullivan van to Muldoon and then back again at a distance of twenty five feet The pet of Boston Sullivan delivered and received this heavy bal for forty minutes without Betraying any signs of weakness Neither Muldoon or Cleary could stand the test of endurance so they alternated taking ten minutes of work each while Sullivan finished as fresh as a daisy Those who saw Sullivan hurl that bag with a velocity and force that made Muldoou stagger when he received it were reminded of John L Sul ivan of old whose blows struck men with the force of a pie driver Sullivan then began be-gan to skip the rope and did with the grace and ease of a ballot girl He skipped 1000 times without exhausting himself and was not audibly or visibly puffing when he got through Sullivan perspired profusely during this exercise After a minutes interval in-terval come the dumbell exercise consisting consist-ing of three movements This was repeated fifty times causing Cleaay I and Muldoon to pant and blow while Sullivan scarcely breathed hard and then a little ball punching followed owed The force and celerity of the blows amazed all who witnessed them They demonstrated two things conclusively conclu-sively That Sullivan can hit as hard sever s-ever and 2That he has lost none of his old time lightning rapidity Sullivan appears to bo in the pink of condition and better than ever before He measures fortyfour inches around the breast and there does not appear to be an ounce of superfluous flesh on him His flesh clows with color of health and his back is covered with a prickly heat which causes him no inconvenience From the waist to the knee his limbs are the perfection of i iymmetri Below the knee they are not of good shape the experts say However his skipping exercise proves him to be very firm on his pins His muscles arc bard and firm and his biceps measure Winches W-inches and h t rbihi friends are jubilant over his condition and they pre dtut an easy victory for him The betting is all one way 10 to 7 on Sullivan Sul-livan When Kilrain and his crowd arrive however there may be a change At 7 oclock Sullivan dined on chicken broth stewed chicken and water melon This was washed down with a glass of ale Tomorrow To-morrow will be the lastday of active training rest train-ing as Sunday will be devoted to absolute |
