the exposition were somewhat disappointed when the closing hour arrived last night in learning that the attendance had fallen considerably below that of any other day They had anticipated antici-pated that yesterday would bo the heaviest day since the fair began However the falling off in attendance is not to be wou dcred at Wo venture to say ihattbercarc very few indeed who have been within the I limits of Salt Lake city since last Wednesday i Wednes-day but who have visited the exposition One would have thought from the stream of humanity which continually poured in and out of tho grounds during the early part of yesterday afternoon that the attendance of yesterday would be swollen to far above that of previous da sIt s-It was no doubt this heavy attendance during tho two or three hours that gave the managers reason to believe their receipts re-ceipts would reach far above any other day Toward the latter part of the afternoon after-noon the people became scarcer and scarcer around tho grounds until at 530 there wore but very few coming in while a greater number were leaving and by 030 attendance had dwindled down to a r < scattering few About this time however people again commenced to arrive but not for long All in all it was very successful day The attcndants had an opportunity of enjoying I en-joying their visit better than those on previous pre-vious days for the reason thatJhe building was not uncomfortably filled Very few articles on exhibition were removed during the day In fact outside of the live stock there was nothing missing which would cut any figure either one way or another ano-ther The live stock however wa mostly taken away before 5 oclock There were no particular features such as contests etc during the day with the exception of awarding a prize to the prettiest girl on the grounds and a minor grammar contest which was continued over from the day before The band furnished excellent music and kept the people in good spirits by playing lively airs from time to time The Prettiest Girl At 230 yesterday afternoon W H Rowe announced from tho stand that the committee which had been selected to decide de-cide upon tho most beautiful lady on the grounds should at once proceed to carryout carry-out the arduous duties imposed upon them The committee chosen for this purpose were N A Empev N Holbrook Alfred W Harper Josh F Grant and Charles H Vincent These gentlemen at once proceeded pro-ceeded to make a tour of the grounds and immediately lost themselves among the mass of humanity present After strolling around the grounds for an hour or so each member of the committee writing down on a slip of paper the name of some young lady who chanced to strike his fancy as being a fine specimen of feminine femi-nine beauty the committee returned to a private room in order to make their selection selec-tion They were not long in doing so for it was soon announced that they bad favored fa-vored the name of Miss Opha above committee decided that Louisa Egbert of West Jordan Jor-dan won the Russell Cyclone Separator valued at SflOO given by the Coop Wagon and Machine company The drawing as previously announced was under the supervision su-pervision of HeberM Wells secretary Deseret Agricultural and Manufacturing society and took place on the fair grounds yesterday at 4 p m Mr Homer Duncan objected to the manner of drawing but was overruled when a vote was put It is proper to state here that the lucern seed which won tho consolidated Impliment companys premium of a 40 cart was threshed and cleaned by ono of tho above machines The lucky ones who entered the seed are Messrs Neilson I and Creer of Spanish Fork Mr Russell I one of the manufacturers who was on the I ground was much pleased and assures us I that his will have company improvements Ion I-on the Russell Cyclone for 1890 which will make it the best lucerne seed thresher and cleaner in the world The Cooperative Wagon Machine company are satisfied I that esterdays exhibit of Russell goods has not in any manner injured the large trade had on them in the past and they look forward to increased sales in 1890 I Admission and Receipts R Soedall J M Lefler who won the diploma for the best exhibit Hour yesterday donated his exhibit tothe poor of the First ward The street cars were able to handle their passengers nicely yesterday something they have been unable to do since the fair began Some eastern ladies viewing the Utah Soap companys exhibit thought it superior to any similar display they had seen elsewhere else-where I In the grammar contest which took place about 11 oclock yesterday morning R H Bradford was the victor and carried off the prize I Neilscn Creer of Spanish Fork took the prue uttered uy the cimolinuted Implement Im-plement company for the best lucerne seed exhibited Jasper Hall of Springville sold a colt for 8351 0 which was owned by alas and sired by Rasmus Neilsons Percheron stallion Sultan Heber Bennion was tho purchaser Louisa Egbert of West Jordan was a happy lady yesterday she having won the Boss separator valued at dOO and given away by that enterprising firm the Cooperative Coope-rative Wagon Machine company Edward Woods was brought here from England for the express purpose of looking after the stables of Rasmus Neilson of Spanish Fork He has done nothing but care for horses during his lifetime It was very gratifying to the Cooperative Wagon Machine company to know that tho lucerne seed whicn won the prize of a 540 cart jesterday was threshed by the Russell Rus-sell Cyclone separator carried only by this company With the exception of Rasmus Neilsons Percherous and Martin < fc Drakesstock the horses were all taken from the fair yesterday afternoon Thoso who visited the exposition after 5 oclock had vacant stalls to craze upon Eleven hundred and fiftyfour persons guessed on the weight of one solitary squash which was on exhibition brought to the fair bv Charles Twelves of Provo Miss Sarah Castleton guessed tho correct weight and received the prize of 10 The reports of the awarding committees are still uncompleted Before the reports aro made public they will have to be examined ex-amined by the directors of tho society for the purpose of conforming to the recom mendatioLs of the awarding committees Spencer Clawson offered a cheekier t25 to the person guessing the neardst number of beans which he had in a glass globe It was found that Mr Thomas brmth of 331 East Sixth South street came within cno of guesing tile coi ret number There were 5752 beans in the trlobe and Mr Smith was awarded the prize It is estimated that29XJO people attended the soirees held by Jack the Ripper He died promptly at 10 oclock last night in great agony pronounced ajoay and a sigh of relief went up from the vast throng as tho enterprising manager of tho Utah Soap company promised the remains would not be unhearsed at any future fair Railroad contractors on the fair grounds yesterday became somewhat excited when it was announced that with a New Era grader which was exhibited by the Cooperative Co-operative Wagon and Machine company twelve horses and three men could load COO wagons or move one thousand cubic yards of earth in ten hours at a c st of 2 cents per cubic yard and that the machines were sold under such a guarantee At the headquarters of George A Lowe throngs of people were highly interested in witnessing the simple workings of the Buckeye lowdown binder This machine has been shown to the people at the present fair for the first time and it is claimed that it will supersede all others hereafter The Evans triple harrow and the Bradley square corner sulky plow also attracted considerable i consider-able attention The Columbia Art companys corner was besieged with crowds all day witnessing the peculiar workings of an airbrush tho latest and most complete artistic invention inven-tion With it they enlarge pictures in ink oil sepia pastelle water colors and crayon This brush gives a richer tone deeper and more transparent effects and a finer and I softer blending of high light and shadows than any other mode of making pictures The Columbia Art company are the only people who make pictures in this manner Professor Benner informed a HERALD reporter yesterday that he would not have entered the spelling contest at the fair on Friday evening were it not for the fact that the Ninth school district were sadly in need of a dictionary He entered the contest con-test for the express purpose of winning the much needed volume got away with the prize aud made up his mind to donate it to the Ninth district The committee yesterday awarded the prize for the spelling spell-ing contest for those over eighteen to James T Holt the committee ruling that Professor Benner was ineligible on account of being one of tho Judges The exhibit on the fair grounds of the F C Austin Cos machinery consisting of well drillers road graders steam generators genera-tors etc was brought to a climax yesterday yester-day by the successful operation of the New Era grader in connection with a Traction engine Permission was jrivert by Mr Nels Empey for the engiue to pull the grader once around the entire grouudsMr Empey riding in advance with a view to prevent any accidents by teams becoming frightened The machine was then put in working order by Messrs Crawford Chapman Chap-man and King and the earth moved in a satisfactory manner Many railroad contractors con-tractors on the ground expressed themselves as highly pleased with I the working of the New Era One of the circulars distributed on the grounds was shown Mr Chapman and that gentleman expressed himself as follows fol-lows That with a New Era twelve horses and three men he would guarantee to load GOO j wagons or move one thousand thou-sand cubic yards of earth in ten hours at a cost of 2 cents per cubic yard and that the machines were sold under such a guarantee guar-antee The operative Wagon and Machine company are sole agents for these goods |
