Show THANKSGIVING Thanksgiving is a Yankee institution and like other Yankee institutions after they have been softened and deprived of their Puritan asceticism has conquered con-quered the people of the United States in spite of themselves The jealous South acknowledges the supremacy of New England on this day and the proud dashing young West bows in reverent submission to the ancient and steadygoing East With one accord we make the homely but toothsome turkey the emblem of a religious and social festivity He is really the national na-tional bird for the occasion I the imperious im-perious eagle being relegated to a secondary place To good old New England in In r Puritan days are we all indebted for many things that are enjoyable en-joyable nationally socially religiously religi-ously and domestically As an instance in-stance what would we do without a I Thanksgiving What would we do without it not merely as individuals indi-viduals and families but as states and as a nation It seems as essential to us in its own peculiar way as Christmas and the Fourth of July It lacks the spontaneous spon-taneous fervor of the great religious and patriotic anniversaries but it has a distinctive feature of its own which makes it welcome to all and enjoyable by everybody The American people have much to be thankful for Peace and order and prosperous industry are everywhere in this broad land There is no fear of do mettle turmoil and we are without apprehension I ap-prehension of trouble from abroad Poverty has not been banished but men are learning how to abolish itby industry I in-dustry and frugality and not by preaching and teaching vain theories and wild speculations In no country and at no period of history has the condition of the people in intelligence in opportunities and facilities of progress pro-gress in peacefulness and in comforts been equal to that of the people of the United States today From one side of the Republic to the other there are joy and gladness such as can come only to a contented prosperous and materially mater-ially blessed community To the thoughtful there is especial cause for gratitude for the peace and serenity of our country in contrast with the doubt the distrust the anxiety and the fear in other lands I All the great nations na-tions of Europe are having trouble Germany Ger-many is worried lest her young Emperor Em-peror shall be rash and involve his empire em-pire in ugly war In France there is impending a crisis which threatens the very existence of the Republic As usual there is in Great Britain an angry political controversy accompanied by domestic troubles The uneasiness among all classes in Russia is growing more intense carrying that mighty nation na-tion certainly forward to revolution involving bloodshed and disaster These are some of the things we see abroad and which cause us to feel specially grateful that the Republic is exempt from them Here in Utah the anniversary finds things in a far more satisfactory condition con-dition than they were in on any previous pre-vious Thanksgiving for several years past |
