Show During recess the various delegates I retired to their headquarters to talk over the situation and to come to some I agreement ag to the candidate for whom the votes should be cast in case I it was found the first choice had no chance of selection Tho meetings were protracted np to nearly an hour within tho time for the reassembling of the convention and for this reason there were few delegates in the hall at 7 oclock Friends of Gresham were much elated at the recess taken this afternoon after-noon and regarded it as favorable to the chances of their favorite Recess was taken only after Senator Miller I Mil-ler of New York and Senator Quay I of Pennsylvania had sent a message mes-sage to Senator Farewell of Illinois requesting information as to whether such action would be agreeable agree-able to the Illinois delegation and receiving re-ceiving an affirmative reply fipecula tien is rife as to when the brake will come and who will be the fortunate candidate who will be the recipient of the votes flowing from tile disintegration disintegra-tion of the solidity of the support of the favorite sons but nothing positive or trustworthy of note can be gathered and doubt still envelopes the situation THE HEAT WAS VERY GREAT in the auditorium and the flutter of fans was incessant The desire for comfort was stronger with many of the men in the audience than their gallantry gal-lantry towards the Iadies and coats were removed and vests onenefl but the desire still remained unsatisfied It is rumored that New York has decided de-cided to BREAK TO HARRISON in order to prevent an agreement between be-tween the Indiana and Illinois delegations delega-tions to solidify the strength on either Harrison or Gresham but it is also stated this action on the part of the New Yorkers is not to prevent a split among the Indiana number of votes from Harrison to Gresham EVENING SESSION The convention called to order at 715 p m by Chairman Estee who had recovered his voice to a certain degree The band struck up inspiring national airs amoogst them being Dixie which however did not create the enthusiasm which its rendition excited at the recent St Louis convention conven-tion My Country Tin of Thee was more popular and was greeted with ap plans as was also Marching Through Georgia As the music ceased i DEPEW ASCENDED THE PLATFORM and received an enthusiastic ovation from the delegates and audience He saidMr Mr Chairman and Gentlemen of the Convention came here as adelegate atlarge from New York neither expecting ex-pecting nor desiring to appear in this convention or before it m any other capacity After my arrival the representatives I repre-sentatives of New York by a unanimous vote presented my name to this convention It was done for reasons in belief of the course it was only a short time since the organization of the Republican party that all divisions divi-sions could be headed and all interests united m the Empire State It would secure in that commonwealth the triumph tri-umph of the ticket under these condi tions Personal consideration and opinion could have no possible weight p tines the discus ion has arisen which L hns coimnccd prosper-ity of this country Applause which unless bscured 12 some way will surely win us success this fall Applause Ap-plause The delegates had voted to I continue in this support as louit as ballots l bal-lots were to be tAken but under the cir cnmstauces after a earnest prayerful lonBirieratiou I came to the ciuc usoa that no perooanl consideration no state reasons < oiud utnnd in the way of the wise submission to them by railway companies railway problem has beau completely settled that it lisa disappeared our politics applause bur I believe there are communities whero it is still eo active that there may bo dunger in having it presented directly or indirectly Under these circumstances and after your vote this morning I celled on the delegation from my own state and requested them to release me from further service in that capacity They have consented and my only excuse in appearing here is to give an excuse for the appearance of my name and to express my heartfelt heart-felt thanks to the gentlemen from the States and Territories who have honored hon-ored me by their suffrages The causes which have led to this notion on the pure of toe State of New York now that thfir iasguient has bsan arrived at will have no heartburnings among the people An that State The delegation will go home to their constituency end find it unanimous in support of whoever who-ever will be the nominee ot this convention I conven-tion Applauee IKQEB30LI srnUs Immediately adjournment the audience sent up a wild yell for Bob Ingersoll in which the majority of the i delegates joined After every human being rights with every other and the mission of the Republican Re-publican party is not ended until the great republic shall be civilized Cheers The mission of that part is not ended until every man beneath her flag not only has the right to cast bis vote in peace but to have it counted honestly and in peace Cheers I ama am-a Republican because that party is pledged to the protection of American Amer-ican labor Ohoers A country that raises raw material and sells it as sih will always be ignorant at oor Cheers The labor to so raw material terial is ignorant labor but the moment raw material is workcd into fabrics and fashioned into beautiful shape that requires re-quires intelligence In consequence of the greater number of industries we have in the United States the more in teiligent our population will be Cheers Another reason is that ordinary or-dinary labor is always cheap Labor commands a price in proportion that the mind is mixed with muscle in the proportion that thought is mingled with effort Cheers The people who want us to raise the raw material for a foreign laud England to manufacture manufac-ture simply vote for poverty and the ignorance of Americans cheers and for the wealth and intelligencs of Great Britain Cheers I am in favor of the protection of American industries because it will develop American brains because under that system we can raise the most beautiful things beneath the starsgreat men and great women Tumultuous applause Where men pursue but one industry they become stupid Where industries are developed overy part of the brain is developed and wo have the use for every aptitude for every talent and for every kind of genius I am in favor of American production because under that policy we have become the richest nation on the globe Cheers I am in favor of that policy because we are the most ingenuous people who ever lived i be inse on an average we have more sense than any people that I ever happened Applause Ap-plause > I believe the hearthstone is the foundation of America Applause Ap-plause I believe the fireside is the al tllr of the Republic I am in favor of that polcy thatwill put a roof over the head of every mechanic Applause I am not only in favor of the Repnbli can party because it is in favor oi protecting tecting industries at home but I am in fnvor of that party because it believes be-lieves in education because it believes in protecting the rights of American I citizens everywhere I am for the party par-ty because it took the last stain from the American flag Applause I am fOr that party because it not only gave freedom to four million of people but to thousands of millions etmnborn I am in favor of it because you can be a man and belong to it Applause Now having said this little cries of go on I regard the success of the Republican oarty as a most important im-portant thing for the republic In the next place no single man whatever his service may ba no single man what ever his achievements nave been no single man whatever his capacity is is of the slightest importance compared with the success of the Republican party Great and continued applause and cheers Consequently the next question is who is the most availabl man other things being equal Cries for Gresham Blame another an-other candidates I do not care why you are for or who I am for the great question is and that question must be settled at the polls not in B whirlwind jof excitement bn after months of discussion when the hurrah is out of your lungs and sense in in your brains Applause and laughter That question must be sat tied by the most intelligent men under the flag and when you do a king easily there is no need of straining yourselves Laughter I would like to see you put upon the next ticket two soldiers who iielptd to anti our coqptry Great applauue I would like to seo two heroes pitted against two IDanocr6tB Great applause ap-plause 1 want two patriots againa two Copperheads Applause Then let the American people make choice let them say who they will have and my idea is this that the man who did not want tn go to Richmond during tho war should not be ienfc to Waihioaton now Applause The great thing we want is success not simply for pcrty but for my country and l not simply for my country but for principle because I believe human liberty is more important im-portant than any country on the globe Great applause Now being a Rapubiican being for the Republican party being for protection wisfhin and hoping for success I aia in favor of the nomination of Welter < j Gras hara Great npplatiso cheering and waviiiK of flags The Illinois delegation wnra standing on the tops of their chair and cheering loudly Dr Douglass upon taking the chair then addressed the excited assemblage as follows Fellow Citizens I rise to say that I am able to promise that you shall have a recitation quite worth hearing by Mr Pope the wellknown veteran of St Louis Cheers CHARLES H POPE the well known veteran of St Louis then gave a recitation of Sheridan Ride which was received with enthusiastic en-thusiastic applause Upon conclusion of Popes recitation tho chair Doug lass said Repnblicana there is an old motto and only sentiment to which every American is expected to subscribe sub-scribe It is that lha CTor may be safely tolerated while the truth is left froe to combat with it The right to canvass the policy lot public men am public measures and eulogize or condemn con-demn as the judgment of the American citizen shall determine cannot be given I have the honor and have been requested to introduce HON THOMAS FITCH of California who will speak to you en i Republicanism Cheers Fitch then addressed the convention I as follows Fellow Citizens I behold in this vas assemblage orators upon whose lips Senators have hung and statesmen whose acts have been woven into the fabric of history and soldiers who have met in convention in de tiny and death The intellect and power of this republic aro here representing not cap tallats and palaces but the workers and homes of our land < The con clence and judgment of this nation are here to choose from among r sixty Million freemen one who in November No-vember next will be elected President of the United States cheers and elel tad by the mightiest popular voica that has ionnd utterance since the dead hero of Appomattox last listened to its thunder Loud applause from the galleries and further clearing of the nail by the delegates Now fellow citizens upon the wisdom of the choice made by this convention may depend the destinies of this land and looms shops and mines and forests yes and furnaces and harvest fields that ten milion faces wet with the dew of toil are upturned with anxious gaza towards to-wards this tribunal Nearly all the delegates were by this time moving toward doors which is to pass upon your fates Loud applause I think Ill quit Loud laughter and applause ap-plause And the venerableMr Fitch of California sat down The lights were immediately out and the large audience dispersed but Fred Douglass probably having been given to night school in his early days amused himself in the dark by writing autographs and giving them to hundreds in the audience Adjourned John S Wise of Virginia on behalf of the Virginia dleegation said that the delegation had elected him member of the National committee Gen Hastings of Pennsylvania said he arose in the interest of harmony and caution and in what he considered the best of the party He believed those interests dearest to the convention would best be served by an adjournment until tomorrow in order to give the convention time to have a morn thor ough understanding and to pre pent any hastyor unconsidered action He would therefore move to adjourn till 10 am tomorrow tomor-row and upon this motion demanded I the roll call of States There were seconds to this motion from Filley of Missouri Henderson of Iowa Fuller of North Carolina and King of Maryland Mary-land The roll call proof eded without incident until New York was reached when the roll of delegates demanded the call disclosed the fact that New York stood ten in favor of General Hastings motion Depew voted no amid applause The result was ayes 535 nays 282 In the midst of Fitchs speech half the delegates got up and ran out and also a good many spectators Fitch in I disgust stopped at one of his flowery periods After the excitement commenced it was a grand mixed cry of Blaine Al ger Sherman Allison and other indistinct indis-tinct utterances Impossible to recognize recog-nize It was noticeable that many of the delegates particularly some of those rom Kansas Maryland Maine Ohio Massachusetts Indiana and Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania left their seats evidently to leave the hall A large banner with Blaine I and Protection upon it was lifted from the seats of the California delegation and its exhibition was largely cheered This flag was held up by M H De Young and Henry G Gage of California Califor-nia During all this many ladies in the gallery waved United States flags The enthusiastic admirers of Blaine attempted at-tempted to bring up to the platform a banner containing the vzords Blaine and Protection but there was such an objection made to it that it was carried back again BEVIEW Th sensation of the day was a withdrawal with-drawal from the contest of Channcy M Depew and tho decision of the New York delegation to support ExQcnator Harrison for President It has for some days been apparent that Depsvr could got hope for tho nomination und he has boen fouling considerablechagrin that ha should hare bean led into tbo mistake mis-take of allowing his name to be pre sunted after the thred ballots in the first session ot the convention today ballots bal-lots in which the measure varied trom the complimentary statues Depew ro qusated the remaining three delogates atlarge from New York to meet him ir council To them he announced his decision to withdraw and the four dele jatfs RBd leaders it once endeavored to revive the orIginal jJoli y of the New York delegation and l choose a man to receive the substantially united support of the State San tor Hiacock has been rather favorable to Allison his Senatorial aol league Platt has favored Alger Miller has teen a Sherman man Depew has had no second choice and tne other three delegates agreed to cast their influence in-fluence for the man whom Depew might name lolloping out the prcgremme but which etlort is first to be made to nominate Harribon Depew selected Indiana and aftT Deoew had formally withdrawn the New York delegation decided de-cided by a vote of 65 to 76 to follow his leadership Much tiiteraent prevailed upoa this decision Leconiing known anu Harrisons nominaion at the evening session VMS fully prdoo 1 But while the cup of victory appeared to be theirs coae gto Harrisons lips manmuvres interfered and for the time being at least dashed it away Friends of alt the other candidates united in forcing the argument thus preventing balloting and at the same time forcing the combination to show its strength This tactical victory for the opposition established the fact that Harrison has not a majority of the convention and that he can ba beaten by another candidate can-didate upon whom a strner combination combina-tion may be cantered CHICAGO June 22H is said tonight that Senator Quay of Pennsylvania favor Allison but powerful effort baye been made to bring him into the Harrison combination It is apparent that for the programme of a numbar of friends of Blame ho has been and is to prevent the making of any nomination t thus bringing on a deadlock and a pos sibility of Blaine The programme as outlined last night was that earl in the balloting Sherman was to have his chance for nomination and failing was to fall back beaten Then Harrison was to have his turn when in todays balloting Indiana which Harrison managed had been claimed unanimous gave Greshcin ono ote on the first ballot and two on the second and Gresbam had a larger number than Harrison standing next to Sherman The belief was general hut Harrison had been defeated as well as Sherman and tht Allison would ba the noxt to be taken up but DSPBTFS action gave unexpected unex-pected force to the Harrison Harri-son movement It is significant however that the friends of Blaine in the New England States voted for adjournment journment Maine Arkansas and Call fornia voting yea unanimously This means that the influences closest to Blaine excepting Elkins do not intend tend to permit the nomination of Har rison if they can prevent it The vote on adjournment shows Harrisons strength to be about 275 and the question ques-tIOn it he can get the 140 votes still needed Twelve Illinois voted against adjournment indicating tHat there is a defection from Gresham in the state which shows itself in a tactical tacti-cal vote rather than in opn revolt Wisconsin has joined the Harrison combination At midnight dozens of conferences are being held Little will be known oncoming the result until the convention conven-tion meets in the morning Much of the success of the Harrison movement depends largely upon the position Sen ator Quay takes and his ability to carry the votes fram Pennsylvania with him Most of the Pennsylvania delegates are Blaine men and as distinctively Blaino States have for the first time shown their hands boldly and that to the onposition to the Harrison combination Tne conviction viction is current that Harrison will not be nominated Ohio delegates had a meeting tonight and decided to stand for Sherman until every member of the delegation demands poll this means that while the State is now a unit for Sherman individual preferences may be exercised at any time Doubtless votes will be cast for both Lar abee and McKinley tomorroir with much the bettec ohaBce of ttractragattention to the latter who is singularly popular and who Is much talked about as a dark horse A summing sum-ming up of the situation is to the effect that Harrison has about an eyen show to win If Pennsylvania does not come to his assistance and the bhermau men of the south hold out aloof he will be defeated in a few ballots Then Allison is to be taken up and if he cannot win the nomination of Blaine may be exacted ex-acted probably after a conference with the representatives of the candidates There are renewed rumors of an au inorized expression from Blaine of his willingness to accept Unless Harrison should be noinipated tomorrow niorn jug the convention will probably rest until AJonday Every delay increases the probability Blaines nomination |
