Show GOVERNOR SEYMOUR i There seems to be unusual mortality t among the noted ones of earth Unfortunately i Unfor-tunately the epidemic that has set in lie among them is no respecter of persons and heeds not the wishes ot mankind There are many men more prominent than Horatio Seymour whose dea h r would not occasion the sorrow that will i f t follow his Now and then there is a 1 man who is great and good and whosp life passed in the full blaze of public 3 opinion shows no bad spots and ugly t blotches Seymour was one of them For more iban forty years he was what might be called a public man and for more than fifty years his name and influence were known and felt beyond t t x his immediate neighborhood and yetI yet-I during all that time nothing that was true sflecting on his character integrity or patriotism has ever been beard of him His career was truly remarkable and one which J can safely be held before American youth as furnishing an example that is worthy of being followed He was born in 1810 and would therefore have been 76 years of age on May 31st next His education was early completed and he entered the profession of the law having studied with and been trained by Chief Justice Bronson one of New Yorks most revered judges While yet a boy in years he was active in politics and was recognized as n i leader in 1811 he was elected to the I + New York Legislature where he continued con-tinued for four years being Speaker of the Assembly In 1850 against his own wished in the premises ne was nominated nomin-ated for Governor of the Empire State but was defeated Two years later however how-ever he was elected by an overwhelming majority It was during that term that he vetoed the Prohibitory Liquor Bill and brought down upon his head fbe anathemas of the church and the CJllrees of the temperance people He teas a temperance advocate and while z not a teetotaler rarely drank intoxicating intoxi-cating liquors yet he realized that it was impossible to stop liquor drinking and that prohibition oonld not be made M prohibit and besides like his party be was onjxjsed to sumptuary laws His veto defeated him for reelection aqd for the next seven years he devoted Lkoself to healing the divisions in the Plty In 1802 he again became a can Uuate for Governor and was elected in upltc of the fact that it was war time and a military man General Wads worti was his opponent He was opposed te the war but t i wln tho Confederates crossed i into Pennsylvania and showed that cvnqnest as well as independence E was In their hearts he went in for the speedy crushing out of the rebellion He was stubbornly opposed to the Conscription act giving the President power to call out for military service all ablebodied men between the ages of 18 and 45 and so impressed the people of his State with his views that there was for a time danger of a conflict s con-flict betweenNew York and the Federal government culminating in the draft riots When these latter occurred Governor Gov-ernor Seymour seeing that the supreme power must be obeyed used his influence in-fluence to allay the storm provoked by the draft The peace Democrats wanted him to act in such a way as tot to-t J i embarrass the general government which he could not have done without joining hands with the rioters and that wonld have been an overt act rebellion At the close of his term of office In the administration ot which he had displayed so much wisdom and executive ability he retired iovrivate I life from which he was again dragged 4 forth in the Presidential contest of 1SSJS Bine e then Mr Seymour has Hvedtjuietly with the exception of in 1871 when t i be consented after much solicitation to t become a candidate for the Legislature l in the struggle that was being male to i get the conuptionists out of office and t t restore the State to honest govern merit As each successive four ears years i i came around he was talked of for t the tf 1 Democratic nomination for President II f i rot positivelyrefused to become a candidate f can-didate though always ready and willing 1 to give the party and its leaders the benefit of his advice and wise counsel I i Among the names that will grow dim lr t slowly America is that of Horatio Seyroocr 1 I JI i f I |
