Show IN SUNNY CLIMES 1 A Salt Lakers Views ot Affairs in Los Angeles Interesting Items = From an Occasional Correspondent Los ANGELES Gal Jan 81885 For the past ten days in this city the weather has been veryfine J bright sunny skies with the temperature ranging from 40 to 65 by the thermometer Ad I walk about see on very hand ros span s-pan les cu las and violets all in bloom with geraniums growing from seven to eignt feet high the bloom on all is the finest I have ever seen Los Angeles has about 37000 inhabitants inhabit-ants there are four banks here with a capital including surplus of f 1030000 and about 3000000 deposits money loans at 10 and 12 per cent per ahnum There were 5909 real estate sales in Los Angeles County last year amounting to 8354740 in 1883 they amounted to J9143131 white laborers are paid 150 to 200 per day Chinoso ftOO and Mexicans 75 cts carpenters and other mechanics receive from 250 to 350 There is a great deal of work being done now such as trimming trim-ming trees pruning grape vines planting plant-ing trees and vines plowing sowing grain etc Wood is very scarce most of that used for fire is the roots of grease wood and it sells at 13 per cord coal by the ton sells at 10 and parts of a ton at the rate of 20 there is not much fire needed for domestic purposes pur-poses however and coal oil stoves are mostly used The treets are lit entirely by electric light the lights on the best streets being about 200 feet acart the sidewalks are very good but the streets I are bad I never saw even in Salt Lake worse roads for mud than Main and Spring were when I arrived here I wits in a grocery store the other day and saw the following lines pasted upon a wall If men to men are so unjust I know not hardly whom to trust I trust so many to my sorrow So pay to day I trust morrow I expect there are some pretty sorry men in Salt Lake about this time 1 recently visited Pasadence key of the valley a city eight miles north here it is a most beautiful place and contains con-tains some very fine residences resi-dences Land is very high there bringing 1000 1200 and 1500 per acre population is 1500 souls with only one liquor saloon that has only recently been opened and as for drug stores there are not so many as in Provo The finest place that I have seen is Riverside a town about sixty miles east of this city with 3000 inhabitants about 100000 boxes of Talslns are made there I annually I drove over to Arlington to see the celebrated avenue and was well paid for the trip The avenue runs I northeast and southwest perfectly straight and is seven miles long It is bordered by three rows of trees with two roads kept in firstclass order The south row of trees is made up of large eucalyptus the center row pepper and in the north row Cyprus and large fan palm alternate Beautiful homes surrounded with orange trees full of golden fruit are seen on each side The soil is sandy and requires plenty of water Liquor license in Riverside is 1500 per annum and as a result I noiiced only two saloons in the place Yours Pico |
