Show Banquet to 1helpa LO DON June 3j United States Minister Phelps was the principal guest this evening at abanquet given to the judges by Lord Mayor Fowler at the Mansion House tonight Among the Americans present were ConsulGen eral Walter Secretary of Legation White and Mr Gillie The Lord Mayor in proposing the toast to48 the United States stated that he hopedsoon to have the honor of entertaining Ex Arthur Mr Phelps in responding to the toast said that he badno such claims to the hospitalities hos-pitalities of Englismen as his predecessor predeces-sor Mr Lowell had established and therefore the reception that had been accorded him was all the more gratifying He ascribed the warmth of his welcome to the natural and abiding abid-ing love between Englishmen and Americans which was fostered and constantly broadened and deepened by their great international intercourse He assured his hearers of the pleasure with which Americans viewed the settlement set-tlement of questions at issue between England and Russia and eulogized the British judiciary whose decisions were revered in America |
