Show A VERY CLOSE CALL Bight Men Narrowly Escape Being Crushed to Deatu The work of razing the old and notorious no-torious Richards Building on Second South Street has not been pro crjted without considerable danger to the men employed on it At 330 yesterday afternoon af-ternoon tho side wall of the second story next to Mulloy Pauls livery stable had been slightly undermined with tint intention of pushing it over into the alley way Seven or eight men were engaged in the immediate vicinity and a number of pasraby had also congregated out of curiosity to see the old adobes tumble As the wall was pushed out westward it sagged back again and on the second time the i whole thing fell on the inside of the building with a crash that aroused the i entire neighborhood and filled the vicinity vi-cinity wit s such a cloud of dust as to hide the ruins from view There was a rush towards the buildings by a crowd of people all of whom expected to find that the eight men had been buried beneath be-neath the heavy mass of ado s In a moment one man emerged from the cloud of dust reached the sidewalk staggered and fell exclaiming as he did so There arc seven more in there He was carried into the stable and it was soon discove ed that lie had sustained no injuries and strange to say allthe others escaped unhurt As I soon as the men realized it was impossible Impos-sible to prevent the wall from tumbling in they immediately ran towards the southeast part of the floor and just us they reached it the fluor lell with them arryinc al down into the cellar where they were hemmed in by the debris and nearly paralyzed from fright The soon extricated themselves however with feelings that could scarcely be described de-scribed and after a few momenta tea continued their work Their fortunate escape can be consider consid-er d little short of miraculous |
