| Show GOVERNOR WESTS REPORT The Washington Hatchet Says It is Ridiculous Caleb W West the newly appointed Democratic Governor of U ah has submitted sub-mitted his annual report to the Secretary Secre-tary of the Interior He is in a state of astonishment that the Mormons whether polygamous or monogamous stand together and are united In the face of the stringent Edmunds law despite de-spite its harsh enforcement Governor West has little knowledge of human nature and has read history in vain if he expected any other result A sense of common persecution whether corrector cor-rector not has in all ages and among all peoples only served to draw them closer together This Li true whether it ba the result of political oppression or religious bigotry That awful eve of St Bartholomew did not crush the Huguenots i but dre fr the survivors closer together and made them the more determined to dare all for conscience con-science sake Seven hundred years of tyranny and cruel mis government have only intensified the Irishmans love of country and longing for liberty Governor West says in this same report re-port I know of no armed orgauiza lion for the purpose of opposing the lawful authorities or resisting the enforcement en-forcement of the laws nor do believe any such now exists But under the favorable conditions existing for such a result au outbreak of violence might be easily provokeI And then he recommends that astron a-stron we ldisciplined and efficient military force to aid the civil power a force of United States troops he ce cribes them afterwards1 placed aud kept in garrison in this territory He asks further that such laws may be passed as will make them as promptly available to the civil authorities here in suppressing violence quelling disorder and aiding in the execution ot the pro cedt of the courts as if they were the militia of th territory It occurs t > us that if this were done an outbreak of violence might easily provoked indeed It doesnt appear that there is anymore any-more difficulty in enforcing the Ed munds law in Uah than there is for instance m enforcing the prohibitory law in Maine Yet no one has been ob surd enough to recommend an attempt to enforce it by calling out the militia Governor Wests recommendation is simply ridiculous WashingtonlTatcAef |
