Show FREED Andrew Smith and Emil Olsen are Released It was understood that when the two gentlemen whose names appear above should have served out their sentences they would be subjected to a rigid cross examination as to their financial standing stand-ing and ability or inability to pay their fines The understanding was well founded as it will be the programme with all who are in any way suspected of owning property enough to allow of their paying the fine Both men were marched to Commissioner Commis-sioner McKays office yesterday morning morn-ing soon after emerging irons the penitentiary subjected to a close crossquestioning by Mr Dickson Mr Smith testified that he sold both of his homesteads The one owned now by the first wife was worth probably prob-ably 2500 that of his second wife maybe 1500 His home on Third East Street had been sold he said to Mr Charles Livingstone but the consideration considera-tion he could not recollect The transfer trans-fer was consummated some time before he was arrested and made order that his family might be provided for The property of his first wife he deeded to her because she had asked for it repeatedly re-peatedly He had no other property but a piece of land which he had paid his sons money for f 250 and that real estate hehad deeded to the boys mother The object Mr Smith had in deeding away hu property so he testified testi-fied was to provide for his family This he emphasized when being questioned ques-tioned as to his motives for putting it out of his control by saying They can rob me all they want to but they cant rob my family In reply to the Commissioner Mr Smith stated that he had eight children in his first family and seven in the second depending de-pending upon him The several deeds to the property mentioned were required to be produced and this being done it was found that the amount exempted ex-empted by law for the protection of the family was greater than that deeded away and he was discharged Mr Olsen underwent a somewhat similar though shorter examination and came out 0 K signing the final affidavit and proceeding on his way rejoicing re-joicing Both of the gentlemen appear to have fared well while in prison and have no complaints to make of their treatment by those in charge of the Pen |
