Show THKY ItrKUgK lOSTArm If I J While Rlfast has been having her riots No th 4 ales has had hers though not so much perhaps bas be < said about it The Belfast riots HP caused b the bitterness existing between Catholics Cath-olics and Orangemen the riots in North Wales are caused by the people relusing to pay their tithes to support a Churc I of England ministers It is estimated that ninetenths of the people in North Wales are conformist that Is they refuse to conform to the doctrine and liturgy of the Church of England ye one thousand Church of England ministers minis-ters receive their livings there and have been supported by the tithes of the people of that section though they ha d no faith in the religion the uimiber taught The Welshmen however hav evidently become tired of this sorfo thing andobject to tithepaying longer A few days ago a Rev Evan Evans refused to drop his salary 25 percent and in consequence of this action the farmers refused to pay any of their usual tithes and told the clergyman to get his salary tho best way lie could The minister put his case into the hands of three bailiffs who undertook to collect Ue tithes for the salary but the farmers collected and drove the bailiffs off compelling the minister to leave with them Th next move on the part of the preacher was to put the matter intothe hands ot an auctioneer who was ordered to oispoje of such property belonging to the respective res-pective farmers as should be necessar to pay each mans tithes but by this time the farmers were joined by han dreds of colliers from the neighboring mines and the auctioneer was kuocktd down and taten away There the matter rests at present Bul we think the days of compulsory tithepayins especially to support an institution in which the people have no faith ate numbered inNorth Wales and indeed should be everywhere I I il tt I |
