Show HOXIES SUCCESSOR Jar Gould has again gathered to him self 8 H H Clarke who has just been elected first vicepresident of the Mis souri Pacific Railroad Company in place of the late H M Hoxie Clarke i was ever a favorite with Gould and Dillon and while those magnate were in control of the Union Pacific Clarke was the big bois much to the disgust of employees of the company and of people living along the line anywhere west of Omaha Very few Union Pacific men have been more heartily cussed by the western public than S H H Clarke who managed the road in away a-way to convey the impression that the people had no rights which tbe railroad was expeted to respect and had no money to which the company was not entitled What a difference there must be tetween him and Gouldd late manager Hoxie The latter was perhaps per-haps the greatest practical railway manager in the United States His conduct con-duct during the great strike last spring was simply superb and in itself i was sufficient to establish a lifelong reputa tion as a clearheaded farseeing cool calculating and upright manager who understood the ri3hts of his company and those of its employees Jay Gould lost his ablest lieutenant when Hoxie died and it ii doubtful if Clarke will do more than rattle around in the dead mans shoes At any rate we are glad that Goulds roads do not come to Utah |
