Show FiRST DISTRICT COURT S The Initial Session of Judge Hen derson Arraignments At 10 oclock yesterday mprniiig the familiar room of the First District i Court j was opened and a number of ttorneys I and a few spectators entered I The atlorupys present were Hon F t I S Richards and P L Williams of Salt Lake J H Kickman of Wyoming Assistant As-sistant District Attorney Hues Hon P H Emerson J N Kimball C C Richards Rich-ards N Tanner Jr H H Rolapp Ransford Smith A R Hey wood P L Barratt W R White L R Rogers V Bierbower Outside of the bar were a few spectator among whom were Hon L W Sburtliff and S M Preshaw < while Alderman Wright occupied a chair within the bar A few minutes past 10 oclock Judge Henderson took his seat on the bench and addressed a few well chosen remarks re-marks to the members of the bar saying that he had always been taught to believe be-lieve that a territorial government was never intended for so important a commonwealth as Utah and asking the assistance of the bar The judges remarks re-marks seemed to impress his hearers very favorably and at the conclusion Col Bierbower arose and moved that Mr J H Riekman a member of the bar of Wyoming be admitted to practice prac-tice at the bar of this ccurt for the pm poses of business which he had come here to attend to The motion was granted and gentleman proceeded to argue a motion in a civil case Scene other business was then attended to Dr Jesse J Driver was admitted to citizenship the Judge asking him the usual questions regarding his intentions to obey the laws against polygamy and unlawful cohabitation as well as other laws of the United Sates Thomas Reed Sr and Wm Hull were arraigned on an indictment charg i ing them with obstructing the public highway by fencing up a road near Kaysville F K Richards appeared as counsel and the first day of the November No-vember term of court was fixed as the day for pleading to the charge Myron W Butler who had been captured cap-tured by the officers at Trenton stood up and listened to the reading of two indictments in-dictments charging unlawful cohabitation cohabita-tion with Amanda Butler and Miranda Butler as his wives The indictments were found by the Grand Jury that was empaneled at the November 1885 term of court F S Richards appeared as counsel and obtained the same order as in the other case The eourt then took an informal recess not however before the name of another unlawful cohabitation prisoner had been called and found to be absent The whole of the afternoon session of the court > as occupied in hearing motions mo-tions r The Knights of Labor The second annual reception of the Knights of Labor of this city was held in Lester Park Pavillion on Friday evening Elaborate preparations had been made for the event and the result was a success The Ogden Brass Band contributed largely to the enjoyment of the occasion by their excellent music George Warren delivered an elaborate address on the labor question proposing propos-ing as a remedy for the evils of society the improvement of educational facilities facil-ities The address was followed by one by Robert Wilson the latter being tbe principal event of the evening and the remedial agent proposed was the ballot Both speakers were well received and made some good sensible remarks A recitation by George 1 Warren and music completed the evenings reception and a large number engaged in the dance tripping the light fantastic toe and enjoying the mazy whirl until midnight mid-night The audience was a large one and the Knights may congratulate themselves on having scoed a complete success Cache Valley Arrests Deputy Emm returned from Cache Valley yesterday morning bringing with him tvo gentlemen whom he had arrested on the charge of unlawful cohabitation co-habitation One was Myron W Butler who was arraigned in the First District Court yesterday morning on two indictments in-dictments After arraignment the gentleman was released under bonds of 2000 the sureties being Will am Driver and John A Boyle The other gentleman was Mr Willard Bingham who was taken before Commissioner Black and waiving examination was bound over in the sum of 1500 his bonds being signed by the same gentlemen gentle-men Exum it is said hired a team of John Blanchard of Logan and in company com-pany with Blanchards boy drove out to the the grain in that burgh I is almost all threshed The yield per I acre he estimates at about two thirds that of last year but the acreage is larger which will partially compensate for tbe poorer yield THE Salt Lake Cricket Club are endeavoring en-deavoring to arrange for a game to come off with the Ogden boys in Salt Lake on the 23d instant It is not yet known whether the game will be arranged l trust teat his honor will continue to exhibit that quality while he remains in position he now occupies Should he do so ant administer the laws with dignity and equalitybe will retain the respect of the members of the bar and all intelligent citizens The judge is now held in high esteem by all who have met him considering con-sidering his brief residence in the Territory Terri-tory and we trust that his judicial career in Utah will end with that esteem being more firmly established |
