Show Ifl i i i fNEPP ISf I IJJIU i t t I A good deal used to be written and t said by Democrats about nepotism i i the Federal administration and unless i Lf I our memory is at fault more than one t of the national Democratic platform r i I protested against the evil But now the I t li word is rarely seen in Democratic papers F T i 1 t ji4 irt n pers though Republican journals have L r 1 i t 1 not forgotten that there is such a word w ai the language < The latest instance of Vu rf rq nepotism is the appointment of a on = of I tecretary Bayard J to the V secretaryship of our neighbor Territory Arizona and it is that somewhat humiliating to note Democratic editors ar trying to justify it saying that iisa condescension on the part of the young man to take I the office and that the people of Arizona willbe proud of the fact that one of the distinguished family of Bayards honors them Young Bayard is 26 years old and a school teacher all his other qualifications are found in the fact that he is the son of his father In other countries there may be something some-thing in a name but in this there is absolutely nothing A Bayard is no better than a Skriggins and a Boggs is equal to a Washington Young Bayard had no more claim on the offi ethan e-than did any intelligent respectable gentleman gen-tleman who had never seen Arizona he has done nothing to entitle him to political pol-itical or official preferment and so far as his name is concerned those who bear it should have thought enough of it tp protect it in a case of this kind Aside from this being an instance of I nepotism against which outrageous Democrats have always protested jt is a violation of party principle and pledge in another way When the Democrats met in national convention in Chicago last year they promised Arizona and the other Territories that if the ticket then nominated were elected the Fed eral officers in the dependencies would be J filled by bona fide residents of the respective re-spective Territories Arizona has scores of men just as honest as able and 7 as capable as young Bayard and who rare r-are not only better entitled to the pffice than he but who because of their familiarity famili-arity with the local situation would be more efficient than he can possibly be If the present administration is not more careful than it has been with its appointments there will be a cry of turn the rascals out that will not apply ap-ply to Republicans alone J J |
