Show A FRANK STATEMENT The New York Herald says editorially editori-ally The Commissioners Emigration have no authority to prevent Mormon immigrants from landing simply because they are Mormons Mor-mons The law provides for the exclusion and return of any convict lunatic idiot or any person unable to take care of himself or herself without becoming a public charge If it is desirable to exclude Mormons Mor-mons then an act for that purpose must be passed by Congress This is more generosity and fairness than we expected from the Herald which is among the most unreasonable of the newspapers in 0 regard to the Mormons It is just such a comment as honesty ana intelligence would suggest sug-gest and is in keeping with the spirit and letter of the law We regard the statute which provides for the exclusii nand n-and return of any convict lunatic 1 idiot or any person unable to take care of himself herself without becoming a public charge as one of the wise tin I t-in the books It is unfortunate for the country that the law has not been more strictly enforced and the scoundrels and paupers who seek refuge and support in this Jand turned away from our shores We doubt if any Mormon will ever complain r com-plain of the rejection of paupers oon Aficts and idiots who may claim membership mem-bership in the church for Mormons more than all others are interested in being free from guchcharacters What Mormons doprotest against is the ex clusion of members of their church who do cot come within the prohibit d classes theyprotest against the Immigration Immi-gration Commissioners usurping the functions of Congress and making a law for excluding men and wom ° n because be-cause they are Mormons as Stephenson and Starr attempted in the case of fifty of the people who camo with the Wyoming I Wy-oming Company |
