Show Deatho a Veteran rf a AMKEICAN FORK November 1 1886 To the Editor of TBC HZRJCLO Many soldier friends and others will be pained to learn that Captain Frank Birk died at his house here Thursday October 23th 1836 The following sketch may be of in ersat to your leaders Frank Birk was born August 20th 1537 in Schmiechea Kingdom of Wnr tenberg Germany While twenty years of age he emigrated to the United States settling in Cincinnati Ohio where he worked at cigar mating At the outbreak of the rebellion he enlisted July Gth 1861 in the 28th Regiment Ohio Volunteers Infantry as a private He steadily rose in the service reaching the rank of Captain November 13th IStM His commission bears the tignature of Governor John Brough At the close of the war Captain Birk was honorably discharged July 6th 1SC5 In 1869 he enlisted in the regular army belonged to Company K Seventh Regiment on duty in the west served out bis term being at the last at Fort Douglas and his discharge papers were signed at Fort Bridget June 1st 1869 December 1st ISO Captain Birk was married to Sarah Hardy of Ogden by Samuel Eggleston Justice of the Peace and soon settled at Corinne Thence in 1871 he removed to American Fork Canyon where he remained re-mained until 1334 when be came to town to reside HaTing become a citizen by natural ization in 1865 he held various civil offices at different times showing himself him-self capable in many relations in life civil and miitary Captain Birk died after a brief illness at first said to be neuralgia of the optic nerve which disease it was thought finally exten ded to the heart His wife and six small children mourn his death the eldest cbild 12 yean old and the youngest 4 months The tamilr are in possession of Ohios Medal to her Veteran He would have been glad to unite in the G A R gatherings at Salt Jake but disease bad gone too far already to allow The citizens of American Fork were very kind daring the sickness and funeral fun-eral And Mrs Birk mindful of these sympathies wishes to express her thanks to neighbors and friends for their helpfulness Respectfully G w M |
