Show Desperate Strikers SAS Pea cclsco December 27At an I early hour this morning a number of itikera on the Geary Street cable road gathered at the corner of Geary anl Franklin streets with the determination determina-tion to prevent the cars from being run The first car coming into the city was attacked bv them anti the conductor and gripman driven from the car The car went fl > iug down tOt street uen following smashing the windows A police officer managed to stop the car and was pelted with stones The officer drew his revolver and tired several snots into the crowd Two persons are said to be injured but not seriously Their names are unknown At the same hour that this trouble was taking place on Geary Street line a number of men attacked the incoming car on Sut ter Street line The conductor and gripman met similar treatment One arrest nas been made beorge W Kelly who was recognized as a former conductor con-ductor on gutter Street road The men who madethe attack were masked so that recognition was rent ren-t tIered impossible The train which was attacked outhe Geary Street rout was I the second one from Central Avenue and was in chargenf Conductor Wr ght inere were two pol mtl and one passenger pas-senger aboard No indications of I troubr were noticed unto the tram was crossing FrauRliu Street when a nuui I der of masked men dashed out and let fly the stones which went crashing through the windows and sinking both policemen conductor and grip man They then boarded the train and after a severe straggle got possession of it The conductor did his best to mite things lively for hc assailants and in tie struggle pulled off the mask of one of the attackers and recognized him to be George W Kelly who went out on a strike the car and dummY were uncoupled un-coupled and tne latter was started down grade tut one of the policemen chased it jumped aboard and stopped it The car was stopped by the other policeman As soon as the policemen had secured the dummy and car they started in pursuit of the attacking party The latter quickly lied and although the policemen Sred after them they all succeeded in escaping except Kelly None of them were struck by the shots it being only the intention of the policemen to stop them The gripmun was severely beaten but hu injuries are not serious Kelly Trhj was arrested ar-rested Is charged with riot assault to murder and felony He say he was on his way to his mothers on Gough Streetwhen the ofBcen askedhim to stop and arrestedhTui Davfdtthomas chargedwith being oTie > of the leaders of the strikers has been arrested also three others named Fred Mesbaum George Small William Morrison all Sutter Street strikers on auapieton of being concerned in today a riots The attack made on the Sutter Street line was even more serious than that of Geary Street In this cases in ethers the attackers were all masked The first intimation that Martin Bowman grip man on train No 19 had of trouble was seeing a lot of boards piled up across tho track He immediately stooped the dummy and got oE to steer the rails This was the moment chosen by the maskers for their attack They knocked the gripman dow and beat him so severely that he had to be carried car-ried to the hospital where it was found that although badly he was not dangerously dan-gerously hart The conductor was frightened and ran pursued by several masked men but he was not overtaken The dummy and ears were then uncoupled un-coupled apd sent flying down the grade in different directions There were three passengers orthe train but when the attack commenced th ey fled for their lives The dummy which started down the grade seemed to fly through the ab but sa il was I secured by the grip it kept the I rails It continued its fearful I pace unjilit reached the companys bfildiniF it titter and foUt Streets Just beyond the building is abumper with which the grip collided It was broken oil thorX but the momentum was so great that the djuamy con > tinned to run untiL it reached the up grade beyond PolK Street J The ear which was Iseat rflying in on opposite direction ran tIIt it smashed into a train which bad Jab the end of the road subsequent to it The croak was so great thai the dummy of the incoming in-coming irairr was badly smashed whore the gild car was completely wrecked The trains on both routes were stopped running at darkso no farther trouble will oecur tonight SuperintendentMcCord of the Sutler Street lina said what had happened could not make no difference in the running of cars |
