Show BURGLAR PROOF I J A4ckyH rii for Salt Lake Oily j r av A I 1 Pi AThirg1ar and His Kit Bagged On Thursday the police received word that a satchel was sent per express from Kelton to this city which might prove interesting and profitable to watch and capture especially es-pecially if a biped could be caught baited by iti as the said satchel was without doubt a kit of burglars tools This was weleome news to the conservators of the peace and officers were delegated to spot the suspicious object who did so with successful results The satchel was received at the express office on Thursday and the watch was kept continuously and untiring until on Friday morning a man called for it and signed his name Ed Loveland So soon as he fairly got possession of it Officers A smith and W Salmon who were watching the precious treasure started toward it when Loveland or Johnson as the man turned out to be saw them dropped his package and started off on a run along the sidewalk northward from the express ex-press office andSmith and Salmon ran after him shouting Shoot him The hallooing caused Johnson to look around when he tripped and fell and the police caught him the sight of two drawn pistols making him immediately calm He asked What did vou want to shoot me for Smith answered < What did you want to run for Johnson was taken to the City Hall and placed in jail and the contents of the expressed ex-pressed article examined when it was found to contain a very complete com-plete find well designed knit of burglars toolssharp welltempered and muffled for quiet work with powder and fuse ready for business It has been knownor surmisedby the police that some five or six of these evil geniuses have been in town for several days but no proof could be obtained for their prosecution prosecu-tion It will be well for our merchants mer-chants to remember that they are here and govern and guard themselves them-selves and their property accordingly accord-ingly News had also reached the ears of the people at the City Hall that a boast had been made that one of the biggest burglaries that had ever been made in Salt Lake City was planned and that everything was ready and that it was to be done right away The capture of these I tools will doubtless frustrate this plan for the present anyway This same Johnson was arrested for complicity in the Ivaysville and Glen oli safe robberies but sufficient evidence could not be produced against him and he was discharged It is hoped and believed now that he can successfully be connected with these burglaries He is the person who received the satchel at Ogden after the last burglary and it was never discovered until quite recently Tlae capture is most fortunate for our merchants as they have not forgotten how successful the thieves were in their former predatory incursions in-cursions and the features of the present case go to show that as daring if not more daring deeds were contemplated by them in the I immediate future Thousands of dollars are doubtless saved by the vigilance of the police and by this capture and a clue is given which will without doubt enable our officers offi-cers to so spot and worry the gang that they will be glad to seek other fields for their prey The case of Johnson cemes up today to-day when if something unforeseen does not turn up the daring thief will be confronted with evidence sufficient to bind him and keep him safely for some time to come |
