Show F r r A LIE NAILED A Story of Police Brutality Busted by Justice Speirs It is a very frequent occurrence for the Salt Lake Tribune to champo the cause of persons who have been arrested ar-rested for offenses against the city ordinances or-dinances particularly if statements are madeno matter how untruereflect u ing upon tne conduct ot the officers when making arrests The paper mentioned men-tioned takes up the flimsiest statements and makes a great expose of the officers of-ficers alleged brutality and when facts are known there is nothing in them But still charges are made against the I police and they have been greatly misrepresented mis-represented We do not claim that our force is I composed of angels but it is certainly a fact that they have been charged with being brutal and savage when not the slightest cause existed An accusation such as we have often heard exploded in its incipiency yesterday yester-day afternoon in the Police Court A young man named A Shear was arrested ar-rested Wednesday night for drunkenness drunken-ness disorderly conduct and profanity and when arraigned yesterday pleaded guiltydesiring to make a statement in the case Being granted the privilege he went on to say that he was arrested in front of the White House by Officers Thomas and A Smith and that without the slightest resistance resist-ance and while signifying his willingness willing-ness to go to jail peaceably he was struck by both of the officers felled to the ground and brutally beaten r that Ned Riggs was present and saw the occurrence oc-currence and would testify to the truth of the whole of his statement This was stated so deliberately and seriously that Justice Speirs decided to institute investigation in the matter and Ned Rigs was subpoenaed The officers denied the charge of Shear and Riggs Shears own witness when put upon the stand told a straight story He saw the arrest made not at the White House out at the saloon under the Wasatch bulldrnsr when defendant was challenging the town to engage izi mortal combat saw Officers Smith and Thomas catch hoid of his anus and walk off withhim no blows were given by either party nastruggKng ensued everything was done quietly and without with-out force the only noise being caused be defendants swearing challenging to fight Justice Speirs said that sufficient testimony testi-mony had been introduced to show that I Shear did not know what lie was talking talk-ing about and that his statement I against the officers was untrue and malicious and not entitled consideration consider-ation He alluded to the disagreeable 1 I duties of the policemen and the amount ef abuse they ere subject to of which a resentment by them was the exception excep-tion and advised the defendant to be more careful of nfs statements Khenir was fined 15 for his part of the row Ii ho hart told Thin Tnb before Justice Speirs learnedhis story and ventilated the busiKesbt we would have read in thqt paper the sensational effusion BrutalFolice I J Co t |
