Show TELEGRAPHIC NEWS Venus Viewers Washington 6The first detachment of astronomers authorized by Congress to observe the transit of Venus on the 6th of December will leave here tomorrow tomor-row morning for San Francisco en route for New Zealand The party consists of Mr Edwin Smith of the United States coast and geodetic survey in charge of Professor H S Pritchett astronomer of the Washington University Univer-sity St Lc i and Messrs Augustus Storey and feustave Hedkuhe of Boston pLotographerr The Adams Express Company today to-day forwaided a through eir to San Francisco ccntaining the fine and delicate deli-cate astronomical instruments necessary for taking the proper calculations and observations and these will be safely loaded on the vessel which will take the party to New Zealand They wi leave San Francisco on the 15tb and be absent about eight months This time will not be consumed altogether in making transit tran-sit observations but the party have a number of other scientific ex jariments ib prospect before submitting the results of these trips to the international convention conven-tion of scientists which will be held at Paris early in 1883 t |
