Show I TELEGRAPH 101 J Counters Business New York SO BusinepB transactions for the week BB shown by the clearinghouse clearing-house exchanges exhibit the following gains and losses as ci mpared with the corresponding week of lift year Gains Cincinnati 83 St Louie 20 10 Providence Provi-dence 3810 Kareap City 38U Hartford Hart-ford 98 New Haven 8 8 Springfield 221 Worcester 11 ilj Lowell 69 4 Syracuse 121 Losses New Y nest 141 Boston 211 Phil delnhi 78 Chicago 28 Baltimore Balti-more 43 San Francisco 180j Pitts burg 4 i Louisville 264 Milwaukee I 330 New Orleans 88 ij Cleveland 5 4 Indianapolis 69 Peoria lii > j Colum bup 36 j enpbis 176 The2ublic Bay These figures of exchanges ex-changes last week chow a decrease at fifteen fif-teen cities including every commercial city of importance except Cincinnati and bt Louie and at the latter the increase in-crease is insignificant In our last it was Rid the comparative decrease at so many QB twelve citie including nearly all the chief points of distribution is decidedly unfavorable symptom but the returns this week are much more unfavorable The decrease at New York following the increase of last week is not due to peculation acthi y for the exchanges exclusively those arising Aris-ing from dealings in stocks are 20 percent per-cent less than those of corresponding week of last year The aggregate out de of New York is not only smaller than that of the previous week and larger by tennine per cent than that of the corresponding weak last year but matter than tue aggregate in any week from April 1st to the end of 1881 Excepting Ex-cepting Cincinnati there is not a single city exceeding Providence in magnitude magni-tude of business that shows any substantial sub-stantial gain while the losses at some are very heavy Some cities till report large exchanges and it our understanding understand-ing of the returns is correct the gain at these points is at present by no means an encouraging symptom Everyone except Kangjas City is essentially a manufacturing city and the increase at such points a time when payment at nearly all the points of dis trn ution are declining remarkably is only an evidence that unsold products must bo accumulating In short the reports re-ports this week are exceptionally unfavorable un-favorable and they cannot be explained as many others have been by the natural shrinkage in the movement of products of last years growth neither can the phenomena be attributed to any monetary deficiency or disturbance though such a disturbance may be apprehended hereafter here-after There is something else the matter mat-ter and the symptoms do not show industrial in-dustrial or commercial health |
