Show THE CABLETM COMPACT n r f r i < Cqnclnsion of a fleasarit anda Profitable Engagement I I X Yesterdays matinee of the Merry War drew out a large attendance much to the surprise anddisappoint iiient of all however r Mr Garletons role was filled by a substitute the star reserving his strength forHhe final per forman e dt night Miss Wiley Miss Davis and the remainder of the cast fully sustained the reputation they have earned 1 Fra Diavolo was given in the evening to an audience that filled every seat in the parquette and dress circle the galleries gal-leries were only fairly represented The opera is the most popular of Aubers works and occupies a place between be-tween light creations and grand Carleton himself had opportunity for the display of dash audacity and thetragie combined and his death scene in the last act stamped him I afresh as an actor of the highest merit it was the most reminiscentof his Rigo lette of anything we have seen him do his vocal performances were of course admirable and his interpolation of Rose Marie won an enthusiastic recall re-call as did several of his regular numbers num-bers Miss Davis and Mr Clark came in for the next honors and gained their usual encore the gentlemans selection The Wolf was admirably done and secured a recall Miss Alfa Norman the new soprano was kindly received but though she has an excellent voice she hardly fills the place of Miss Wiley Mr Hatch has the sweetest of voices but so etherially light that it is as if one were listening to a tenor singing through a telephone forty miles away one of his numbers was particularly well received re-ceived costumery chorus and orchestra or-chestra were ail up to the usual standard of excellence Mr Carleton and his company take with them the best wishes of a host of friends an l admirers who unite intrusting in-trusting that Salt Lake may not be forgotten for-gotten on the return trip from California Califor-nia Mr Carleton states that it is his desire toTisitns then for two nights at lean probably with a presentation of the new work his company are now daily rehearsing Francis the BlueStocking Blue-Stocking and probably with a revival ofthe Bohemian Girl or Martha He may rest assured that his Heart Bowd Down and Plunkett are still fresh in the minds of his admirers |
