Show DEATJLOF McKENZIE g j 1 I A I Well Tvnown Citizen Dies in LSt 3larkJs tvu t Hospital D Banks McKenzie well known in several circles of this city died yes terdayjnorning at St Marks Hospital at about 7 oclock It was known ttiat hehaj been indisposed for some time past but no one thought of his being so seriously ill and the anouncement of his death was received with the most profound surprise congestion of the brain is said by the hospital physicians to have been the immediate cause of his death Dr McKenzie was of Scotch birth and was about 47 years of age He came to unerica when quite young and origin aily settled in Massachusetts j he is laid tu Have served in the late war on the federal side and to have received several I sev-eral wounds in various engagements j lie came west in 1880 and immediately commenced the work in which he probably pro-bably took more real interest than anything any-thing else during his lifethe Temper ince Reform movement He came from Nevada to this city where he infused considerable life into the Blue Ribbon societies and at one time drew large audiences to the Temperance meetings in the old Clawson building on First South Street where he presided as chairman As is welt known the present Walker Opera House was projected by aim for the Reform Club building but oefore it had progresed far it was diverted di-verted to its present purpose through having been purchased by the WaJker Brothers j Dr McKenze was given the management of the house at its completion a position which he held with indifferent success until the beginning be-ginning of the present year He then resigned re-signed and set himself to work upon the big hotel scheme of which so much lias been latterly said Just what he had accomplished in this direction is very uncertain An intimate friend of the Doctors and a prominent dealer informed areporter that he thought all the guarantee required by the Chicago j parties had been raised with the excep tion of some 2000 The list of the guar n cr3 had been handed Mr W Jr Godbe by Dr McKenzie and the first named gentleman went east recently and was tel have called upon the Chicago parties in relation to the prosecution of the work Dr McKenzie had no relatives here excent a niecewho will probabl accompany accom-pany his body on Saturday to North brow Mass where his wife children reside His life was insured for 3000 hich will go to his wife i |
