held was packed to the doors by an audience eager to yotc one wayor the other upon up-on ther3UCiUon that brought them together to-gether An expression of anxiety but half btippresed was visible upon People and Liberil countenances alike for each knew that the other had come out in strength and neither knew as yet what the precise strength of the other might be Among the Liberals present were such representatives of the party as Judge McBride Judge Gil christ Capt Bailey Maj Bradley Chmy Agramontc and Louis Biggel Punctually Punctu-ally at half past 7 Mr JJ Waddell chairman of the school trustees arose and called the meeting to order immediately after which he nominated David McKenzie as chairman of the meeting A number of voices seconded the nomination Mr John Cunnington nominated Capt F M Bishop The question was put on Mr McKenzies nomination and the result of the vote 105 ayes to 35 noes at once told on which side the strength at present lay On motion of Mr David James Mr BG Eaybould Liberal a member of the trustees board I was made secretary by unanimous vote AVm McLaughlin Peoples James Anderson An-derson Liberal and D James Peoples Peo-ples were appointed as tellers and to act as judges of election Immediately after this the crush became so great that a motion was made to adjourn to the meeting hOute adjoining and this being carried the assemblage emptied itself from its cramped quarters into the more commodious ones on the cast The meeting was called to order by Chairman Chair-man McKenzie I I M Waddell said Ladies and gentlemen gen-tlemen you have been called together by the school trustees of this distnct to vote updn the proposition whether I not we shall assess a tax to build aj I school house The number of children I in the Seventh District between the age of six and eighteen is 372 At present we have only accommodationsfor sixty It is clear then that a strong necessity I I exists for increased school facilities We have here plans and specifications drawn out and an estimate made of the sum required We think 1 per cent of I the assessed valuation of our property will suffice the amount raised would bcfi500 The Chairman Ladies andgcntlemcn you have heard the remarks and recommendations rec-ommendations of the trustees In making mak-ing this report and in calling this meeting meet-ing they have but discharged the duty youimposed upon them when you elected them it now remains re-mains for you either to back them up tin their recommendations or to disapprove of them The readiest way to decide the matter will be for nearly fifteen minutes distributing slips of paper among I the assemblage The chairman announced an-nounced that all who favored the adop tion of the tax would write yes on their slips those disapproveddt would write no An hour was then consumed in receiving and recording the votes The chairman at length called for order and announced thiit the tellers were ready to declare the result re-sult of the vote Amid deep silence Wm McLaughlin then arose and said vMr President the total number of votqs cast is 15 of these there are 127 yes and U 1Q5 The applause and stamping which followed this declaration were vociferous vo-ciferous in the extreme and quiet was only restored Dj the chairman repeatedly repeat-edly calling for order The Chairman You have heard the result A tax 6f 1 per cent will now be assessed determine to be paid a the trustees may Most of the Liberals in the audience did not remain long after the announcement announce-ment they retired by ones and twos and but
