Show TELEGRAPHIC = NEWS a JHA5fCOGKAAHD ARTHUR l The General and the President Hobnobbing New York 30The Times says that at the conclusion of the parade today President Arthur held a reception at the Fifth Avenue Heel About 1000 persons per-sons ladies and gents paid their respects to the President At firstit was supposed that the reception was JOT gentlemen only and ladies in groups clustered about e doorB Presently a gentleman escorting two or three ladies invited them to enter with him and be presented and they assented and were introduced This was the opening gun and there was an immediate and general advance of ladies all along Vhe line Gentlemen trooped into the room with from one to four ladies in charge and all were smilingly greeted Presently General Hancock approached ap-proached and President Arthur reached to grasp his hand saying How de you do general I am very glad to sea you and the two gents entered into a conversation con-versation which lasted several minutes The general was accompanied by General Mitchell and several other members of his staff The President and the defeated candidate for the presidency talked in a most genial fashion General Hancock asked the President if he would have Lime to visit Governors Island and said he would be only too happy to have him pay a visit either socially or officially The President said he was afraid he could I not visit the island this time as he must leave the city on Thursday but the next time he came to New York he would be very glad to accept the invita tion The President then asked the General Are you going to attend the grand army memorial at the academy of music tonight Gen Hancock replied that he would be there with hid staff Then rejoined the President why not leave your staff in their proscenium box and come and sit with me I shall be on the stage and shall l be favored if i you will sit with me General Hancock thanked the President and sid he would be pleased to Bit with him Other callers pressing forward the General stepped aide to talk with Secretary Folger Gen Barnum Gen McQuade and other gentlemen but he lingered in the room for half an hour enjoying an occasional interval of chat with the President |
