Show T TELEGRAPHIC NEWS f I 11H The Sioux Row Washington 21Tbe following telegram was received today by the commissionerof Indian affairs PINE RIDGE AGENCY E August 1882 f Commissioner of Indian Affairs Washington Red Cloud and hostiles are completely I com-pletely squelched He refused to come to the office yesterday and hear your warrant for his arrest He is n > w on parole The chiefs and police are responsible for his conduct Signed McGiLLiouDY Agent The Indian bureau received a communication today from the Mescalero agency stating that one of Victorias principal warriors who left the agency in 1870 with Victoria had been captured Omaha Neb 21A dispatch was received here at military headquarters headquar-ters from Colonel Sumner commanding com-manding at Fort Robinson He says matters are in a more satisfactory condition among the Sioux of Pine Ridge Agency and that Red Cloud has been arrested and put on parole the other chiefs and police being responsible re-sponsible for his good behavior From a letter received here from Agent McGillicudyit learned that the letter signed by fiftytwo chiefs containing threats and sent to Col Sumner was written by one God frey living in Nebraska not far from the agency and who claims to be an old friend of Secretary Teller Womans Dress has been working in with Red Cloud for some time to get Red Clouds help to make him Womans Dress a chief He is making trouble and if he continues Agent McGillicuddy threatens to put him in the guardhouse A majority of the Indians who signed the threatening threat-ening letter did not know its contents con-tents As far as the outbreak is concerned Agent McGillicuddy says the Indians will kill Red Cloud if necessary He demands that the leaders in this movement be sent to Fort Leavenworth or that the department stand the consequences conse-quences As matters now stand he says it will be necessary to transport three or four All of the Cheyennes and a majority of the northern Sioux stand by McGillicuddy The police are all coming from the villages vil-lages McGillicuddy closes his letter let-ter by saying that there must be decisive de-cisive action as it is open rebellion on the part of a few Indians and all he asks for is instructions |
