Show pCITY HEBER CITY H J Visits There and Continues His Organizing HEBER CITY December 22 1884 Correspondence o THE HERALD This is the Colorado Springs of Utah for summer resorts We resorted to here yesterday and find this beautiful city in a small valley almost entirely surrounded by mountains substantial twostory houses beautifying the elegant squares built out of square sandstone blocks about double the size of adobes laid in lime mortar at a distance looking like brick just put up In the back ground are to be seen large Yankee barns surrounded sur-rounded by neat picket fences with the gates mostly oneotl1e hinges A huge twostory coop store well built a brand new courthouse just finished and many public buildings in keeping all have the appearance of law and order We asked who was the leader and prime mover in all this thrift and were answered that it was Abram Hatch He was not alone president bf the wholesome destinies of this settlement but has represented his county for the last sixteen years in the Legislature of Utah where he is known as the tall Sycamore of the Wasntch Being alive a-live Yankee he is ever useful HyrumNeibers son 18 years old left the logging canip to go to Heber City about a week ago at which place he has not arrived The settlement turned out but as yet no tidings There are no hopes of his life Another young man by the name of Neuron 16 years old went out to the mountains to find some horse and not returning that night the settlement settle-ment turned out and found him late in the afternoon insensible from exhaustion ex-haustion but still alive and was alive af last account I have found but one man in all my travels that wanted to lease the public domains and that was James Bromley of overland fame He told me that he wanted to lease from government all the public domain for cattle sow it in grass and plant shade trees and shrubbery shrub-bery lay it out in walks and have babbling brook running through it and if ever a horse or sheep man had the audacity to ay his soul was his own he would hang him to the first tree I left James believing that he was a monopolist and would get twelve men to sit down en tne if he could The following is the organization of the Cattle and Horse Breeding Association Associa-tion perfected at Heber City Joseph Hatch president John M Murdock and Alva A Green vicepres idents Harmon Cummings secretary Joseph Moulton treasurer Executive committee A Hatch Isaac Cummings John Cummings J R Murdock W C Murdock Wilford Van Wagon Joseph Goodwin John M Murdock and A Green |
