Show I The Federation Labor Union I II i Washington Alexander Ken adypresidentofthe federation labor unions Washington addressed a communication to the chiefs of the vai lous labor organizations throughout through-out the country in which he gives i the substance of a conversation with Senater Blair chairman of the Senate committee on education and labor The communication is dated 10th and is as follows Gentlemen 1 casually met today Hon Henry W Blair chairman of the committee on education and labor of the Senate to which committee com-mittee has been referred the most important question of the day the solution of the labor problem The distinguished senator imparted tome to-me as president of the federation labor unions in this city some very important information and requested re-quested that I should convey the substance thereof to the lead ingmembers of the most numerically powerful labor organizations throughout the Union as the facili ties for direct communication with those bodies by the committee have not been perfected as yet The senator sen-ator expressed the opinion that the plan presented by the Washington City branch of the federation labor for a central committee of representative represent-ative workmen fiom all sections of the Union at the capital with duly authenticated subcommi tees or directories will prove the most practicable method of obtaining in formation relative to the present 1 condition of the working class and their grievances the present labor strikes and practical suggestions as to what will tend to the improvement improve-ment of their social conditions Senator Sen-ator Blair remarked also that a portion por-tion of the public press is doing a great injustice to the committee by indicating that the members thereof are unmindful of the great importance impor-tance of the vital questions submitted submit-ted them for investigation insinuating insinu-ating that they have run the affair into a junketing party at the seashore It will be the aim of the committee to fairly adjust the relations rela-tions between capitalist and laborers labor-ers not hurriedty but with due deliberation He therefore hoped hat both capitalists and laborers will select representative men in whose judgment and integrity they fan place perfect reliance and that both parties will do the committee the justice to believe they will act honestly and fairlyaccordmgto their judgments In transmitting the foregoing information at the le qest of the honorable chairman of the committee designated by the i supreme power the law making II power of the land to arbitrate between be-tween the agressive capitalists and comparatively defenceless laborers I cannot resist the opportunity to say as a colaborer of the earnest and devoted men to whom this communication commu-nication is respectfully addressed that I think it would be wise policy at this juncture to advise all workmen work-men on strike who rely upon the financial aid from the scanty resources re-sources of fellow laborers to assume as-sume work at an early day at least before winter with increased expenses sets in upon the best terms obtainable from their late employers and continue to work with as much patience as they can command until they can see what congress will do in the matter If it should transpire in this legislative inquiry that the industrial classes are being juggled by the knavish tools of unscrupulous unscrupu-lous powers which I will not believe until it is clearly proved n national strike could be inaugurated within thirty days after the adjournment of congress next March by the unified labor organizations of the United States with tenfold ten-fold more effect than the recent strike of 150000 men If the siege is raised and hostilities ceased for the winter The funds now donated to sustaining the strikers may be more effectually applied ap-plied to the economical maintenance of the central committee of vigilant and active workers at the capitol in collecting and preparing statistics to sustain our case before Congress I disclaim any authority from anybody any-body of men for the suggestion contained con-tained in the above paragraph but submit it as my individual view of the present situation Very respectfully ALEXANDER KENADY President Federation Labor Union Washington City P |
