Show A LIBERAL RALLY A Hold Forth at the Federal Court Room Last Night The Old Old storyWith a Sad Fate at the End I At 735 on Saturday evening the district court room was crowded with supporters of the Liberal cadre The meeting was called to order and Governor Murray was introduced in-troduced as the chairman of the meeting Governor Murray made a few remarks re-marks He had never heard the national airs played more sweeter It seemed though light was breaking break-ing in upon Utah The power he was thankful rested in the hands of the people who should weigh every question intelligently In the words of an illustrious man he would say let the good work go on with charity toward all with malice to none Let not any man or set of men assume to dictate to any community com-munity but let them assimilate with the people of this nation and partake of their interests No one can evade the responsibility in Utah cf maintaining his integrity in the fight for civil and ° religious liberty He was pleased at the honor of presiding at the meeting He announced that Judge Suther land would speak The judge arose and said he wished to present reasons why the Peoples ticket was not fit to succeed In the early ages governments were maintained main-tained by force without law the people being little in advance of slaves having no voice in the government The will of monarch or potentates was the law People were devoted to war and there was no peace at such times They were friends only when treaties were formed to carry out certain results They had no method of redress The strong needed followers and the weak required the assistance of the great the feudal system forages for-ages following which enslaved the populace Cries of louder The judge said he would give all the voice he had He humorously remarked re-marked he had once been called to breakfast in a soft sweet tone such a one that he had never forgotten for-gotten The princes he continued placed certain men in possession of lands The tenant would come before the landlord swearing he would fight or die for him in consideration con-sideration of being allowed to occupy oc-cupy a piece of land at the will of the lord If the latter was taken prisoner the tenants would ransom him and often pay his debts When people began to be more civilized then commenced a struggle which has ever since been continued to attain equal rights In every constitution con-stitution framed since then the clause guaranteeing to all people protection of property and life which should not be taken from them without duelprocess of law was insertedThe signers of the Declaration Declara-tion of Independence declared they wanted no king for the power of I governement was vested in the go v rned They held the truths that all men are created equal annulling the difference between the king and the beggar Life liberty and the pursuit ot happiness was their platform The speaker read from the Constitution of the United States Congress shall make no law in regard to the establishment es-tablishment of religion or prohibiting prohibit-ing the free exercise thereof etc The people of this nation do not wish a king By supporting the Peoples or Mormon ticket citizens acknowledge they want a king If the church carried out its intent the downfall of the United States would be the result Any person having resided a year in Utah can vouch to the truth ot the assertion If he cannot he should not be permitted per-mitted to vote but should be placed under the care of a guardian The scheme of the church was to govern gov-ern the state The former had no governor it had no constitution no habeas corpus nor anything similar to the government of the United States The church subjects are not allowed to go to law with each other Applause If the church was located elsewhere they would not acknowledge the Constitution Never prior to the publication of the Peoples platform had the church declared equal rights to all men That body was indicted and through the papers pleaded not guilty Had any private in the Mormon ranks been consulted about the use of tithing or the extent of ths power of the apostles He thought not What were the walls about the temple block and the block east of it built foi It certainly was not to keep out the Indians When people come here from abroad the only government they are thereupon made acquainted with is that of the church In a territorial form of government the church was subject to the United States All Mormon conventions have a back door either at the top of the room or the bottom depend ing upon the locality whence intel ligence was received through which came all messages Mr VanZilo would doubtless not be elected a voice He will but the people would raise Caine the consequence of which will be the government ol f the church He fy would ask any Mormon present if he would wish to be subject to the powers of the church The Peoples platform stated taxation was light but was ten per cent a light rate of taxa tion Tithing would be exacted as soon as the church became dominant domi-nant and from under the jurisdic tion or the United States If any one vt uld not ctcceao to its demands he would be set to his reward At 1 I one time when the kings held sway over estates of persons dying intes tate the widows and orphans got i but a very small portion of the estate tate but as soon as the disposal of the property was vested in the Church of Rome the widows and I orphans got nothing That church is now typified by the Mormon church The Peoples platform states that about SO per cent of the criminals of Utah are Gentiles This reminded him of a story where a person was criticising the report of the convictions in the several counties in one state Mr JJs county did not punish criminals at all But why was it that only 20 per cent of the Mormon criminals were punished The Gentiles could not obtain indictments or they would be punished But in time the church would be destroyed by the force of better intelligence What a happy time that would leif le-if a system could be inaugurated to show people the error or their ways and turn them from it In the present instance the candidate of the Peoples platform was forced upon the convention by those who had no right even to cast a vote Applause The platform denies that the church dominates the people peo-ple Thanking the assembly Mr doutherland closed his remarks Music by the band When Johnny Comes Marching Home I Tn oiil 0 i11G11 V J Governor Murray introduced the I Hon W HClaggett of Montanaasa person worthy the honor of the citizens cit-izens of Utah That gentleman arose and stated that in Montana as well as inUtah the church desired to control the destines of the government gov-ernment of the people He loved the uproar and turbulance of a free people For the first time in Utahs history two parties are struggling for supremacy but the dominating party would not withstand long the effects of the ill will of the public opinion The question arises what will the people of Utah do in the face of that expressed wish of disapproval disap-proval The people of the United States were disposed to bring the Mormon Church to account for transcending the bounds of church authority For thirtytwo years this Territory had been in rebellion against the laws of the United States Does anyman suppose that anywhere in the Union the evils which exist in Utah will go unpunished unpun-ished The Edmunds bill was the first of the half dozen doses of purgative pur-gative pills which the Mormon Church must take When the English yeoman the Daue the Swede or other oriental native comes to America he must renounce re-nounce allegiance to the former ruler and bow before the Constitution of the United States before he is an American citizen The old oath of allegience to the Lord under the feudal system mentioned men-tioned by Judge Sutherland had been destroyed though to some extent the idea of allegience existed as in a government requiring the efforts of its citizens in times of war Any government that fails to recognize the freedom of thought and protection of life liberty and property is not a government that will stand the force of the civiliza civilization ioE of the age Stephen A Douglas in 1858 suggested that the only means of settling the Utah question was to repeal the organic act and place the people under military law His suggestion was well made and should be carried into effect Music by the band C C Goodwin Esq editor of the Tribune was the next speaker Years ago when Mr Van Zilo Gov Murray Col Hollister and others were fighting for the freedom of their country in the rebel war where were Mr Caine and his supporters sup-porters They never fought for their country Never since the speaker had been in Utah has there been a day when lino lawyers would hire out to defeat the workings of the laws of the United States Lawyers are continually hired in Congress to say that if Congress interfered with Utahs affairs af-fairs the Constitution would be trampled upon Utah should feel grateful for the efforts of the agitators agi-tators for if the load that was borne fifteen years ago was suddenly restored to the backs of the people the thraldom of Utah would be broken in fifteen minutes Addressing Address-ing the Mormons who might be present he wished to say he didnt want any of their homes He didnt want their farms He had farmed in Nevada and at the cost of 10000 had raised one crop of vii e I worms and one crop of crickets If John T Caine was voted for a man would be voted for who would endeavor en-deavor to enslave the people of Utah who would do the bidding of the church authority He wished I men would vote as their consciences dictated for the freedom of tin enslaved en-slaved people Mr Wm Green of this city formerly for-merly an intimate acquaintance of President Lincoln was called upon for a speech but feeling indisposed excused himself dII H W Lawrence was willing to annouuce that his cause was that of the Liberals He was surprised sur-prised at the amount of good work done by the Liberal agitators Mormons now enjoy the right of free speech and of assembling in their primaries and declaring who eshall represent them He wa pleased that the republican form of government was dawning upon this territory and that the people are being freed from the fetters that have long bound them On Tuesday next every man should give expressIOn expres-sion by ballot to his own views and not the ideas of a church free ing himself from despotism The speaker stated that ho had dated to come out of the Mormon church Judge Hoge being called upon 1 said he had performed the feat of making a liberal speech in the shadow of the Temple at St George A feat which he supposed bad never before been accomplished in the history of Utah In Utah there are about 16000 of lawbreakers 7000 of that number reside in this city Of this 7000 about 5000 are in the Mormon Theatre this evening shouting themselves hoarse over the ideas advanced by their orators He wanted to say about Jno T Caines nomination On the 10th of last month at a priesthood meeting John Taylor said that the priesthood runs Utah but for all that a nominating committee was going to do its work by nominating John T Caine A voice shouts false Judge HogeMy frend you were not there The voice I was Hoge No you were not you were in that other meeting The voice Noe wasnt 1 was there Thats how i John T Caine was nominated Adjourned to meet at the polls on
