Show I TELEGRAPHIC THE JEANNETTE I Ancient betters from MelYille Philadelphia 15The Times today print two additional letters from Lieuc Melville one written before he left San Francisco and the other during the voyage voy-age of the Jeannette In the first he expresses ex-presses doubt as to the seaworthiness of thevesselsaying that the Tigress was bad enough but that the Jeannette was much worse He said he loft nothing undone to provide against what was ahead of him find he was not going to back out but that the Jeannette would never come back because she could not etand the ice In the second letter which contained con-tained the last news received from the Jeannette until Melville sent a telegram announcing that she had been crushed in the ice he said we did not send our convoy con-voy back from St Michaels aa we expected ex-pected because we were too deeply laden already to take on our stores It WAS very fortunate for us we had her to carry our extra coal and stores over here for on the way we were caught in a terribe gale of wind and owls to the condition 1 of the ship and deeply laden as we were the seas had a clear sweep over us It stove in over the forward parts carried away the bridge carried away the bulkheads bulk-heads and in fact just drowned us out Had we the other stuff on board we must have foundered or else got it all overboard in time We leave here for East Cape today having taken on board all our stores and we are in a very much worse condition than we were in before but we think that may be when we got into ice where the wind cant raise the sea will be 0 K We find from the natives na-tives that Nordenofjlda Swedish Nore gate had passed out through the strait so that part of our duty i = done though we are going eastward of West Cape as far as Nordenjolds winter quarters to make eure of his escape from the ice After that we point for Wrangle Land if we can if not we drift in pack ice towards to-wards the North polo This letter was dated St Lawrence Bay west coast of Behrings Strait August 26 1879 |
