Show THE RACE Bateman Walks Away with Ewing The race between Ewing and Bateman tqgk place on Saturday according to agreement Excepting that the day was cold it was quite pleasant and everything propitious Both horses did well and Ewing trotted at a better gait than ever before be-fore jhere Bateman is a fine looking look-ing horse powerfully built and quite easy gaited He took the first heat easily in 235 Ewing making a bad break just on the outturn In the second heat Bateman shot ahead and kept the heat most of the way He broke once or twice which gave Ewing an opportunity and he improved it However Bate man lost nothing and again took I the lead On the homestretch I Ewing gradually gained on Bate man and finally collared him both horses going under the wire under the whip and at atremesduous gait it was declared a dead heat time 233K The heat was a most exciting excit-ing one Bateman had heretofore been the favorite im the pools but the crowd switched and Ewing I took the lead Another good start I was secured after a little scoring and as they passed under the wire Bateman shot ahead as he did every time Ewing gradually crowded up but broke coming down the stretch and Bateman took the heat in 233Kf the best time made in the race and the best record ever made by any horse in a race on the track here It has been beaten by exhibition horses Golosnurh Maid and Rarusand by such horses only The conclusion with a majority was thab Bateman had the race now though Ewing had many friends The horses scored several times before a start was secured and Bateman fI again pulled out ahead He opened quite a gap for a time but Ewing gradually closed in on him and when nearing the stand on the half mile collared his opponent and both animals went past amid the cheers of the crowd Just as the out turn was reached on the second round the sulkies struck some claiming that co Bateman had run into Ewing and others claiming that as Bateraan was a little ahead and his place was inside Ewing must have run into him At any rate when Bateman pulled away from Ewing the latter lat-ter went off his feet and the former came in ahead easily A foul was claimed by Ewings owners and by Grant his driver while Mr Travis who drove H Bateman and who owns the horse denied anything any-thing of the kind and said that she s-he held his place if there was a foul it must hare been on the part of Ewing It was also claimed that Mr Travis threw his whip back and struck Ewing on the head thus throwing him off his feet but Mr Travis also flatly denied this Quite an excitement occurred for a time and the judges must have discussed dis-cussed the matter fully twenty minutes min-utes beforo they decided when the heat and race were givento Bate manA A running race half mile dash for S25 next took place and Granger won it without any effort at ana an-a |
