Show ISTAUDAED BEAKER Hon ToW T Caine Again the Peoples Nominee THE FEBBITOEIAL CONVENTION I The Proceedings at the Meeting on Wednesday Mr Caine Receives Re-ceives the Nomination by Acclamation The Peoples Territorial Convention met yesterday in the City Hall at 12 oclock noon The room was fairly filled with delegates from the various counties coun-ties Mr Grover moved that Mr James Sharp be appointed temporary chairman chair-man Carried Mr J F Wells moved that Mr J C Graham be appointed temporary secretary secre-tary Carried On motion of Mr Page a committee of seven was appointed on credentials The chairman named as this committee J S Page of Utah County JF Wells Salt Lake County R S Campbell Cache Geo W Bean of Sevier County Jos Barton Davis County N VJones Salt Lake and W A King of Millard On motion a recess was taken till 1 oclock to allow the committee on credentials cre-dentials time to deliberate At 3 oclock the convention reassembled i reassem-bled and the committee reported that they had found the following named persons entitled to seats in the assembly Beaver Robert Storey Box ElderO G Snow Cache W D Hammond John T CaIne Jr George W Thatcher R S Campbell W H their credentials and on motion were included in the roll These were Joseph Kimball of Rich county and Robert Stoney from Beaver county The roll was then called by Secretary Graham It was moved and carried that in the absence of Mr Peery Mr Boyle his alternate be entitled to the seat The name of E H Blackburn was placed upon the roll as delegate from Piute county Mr Campbells motion to reconsider this question was lost Mr Wells moved that the permanent organization consist of a President two vicepresidents a secretary two assistant assist-ant a chaplain and a sergeantatarms Carried Mr Farr moved that Mr James Sharp be elected permanent chairman Carried Mr Caine moved that Mr George W Thatcher of Cache be elected first vicepresident of the convention Carried Car-ried I riedMr Hindley moved that Mr A 0 Smoot Jr be elected second vice president Carried Mr Graham was elected secretary Mr J FWeils first assistant secretary Mr James Taylor second assistant Mr Lorin Farr chaplain and S W Woolley sergcantatarms The newly elected officers took their places at the head of the hall by request of the chairman The roll of permanent organization organiza-tion was then called and fiftynine delegates were found to be present The Secretary at the request the chairman read the call for the convention conven-tion Mr Jame moved that as there was a vacancy in the representation from Salt Lake County the name of Miss Kate Snedaker be placed upon the roll as adele a-dele ate Carried Mr Farr moved that the convention proeed to nomination of a Delegate to Congress Mr CAMPBELL Would it not be better bet-ter to adopt a platform first upon which we wish our candidate to stand ME FAImI want him to stand upon the old platform Mr Richards thought if it were the design to adopt a platform that it should be done first Mr J T Caine Jr moved that the motion be laid upon the table for a few moments Seconded Mr Farr thought it was unnecessary to detain the convention inasmuch as a platform had been adopted at the last session and he knew of none better than the old Mr Caines motion was lost Mr Campbell then moved that the platform of the Peoples party adopted two years ago beadopted as the platform of the convention Carried The voting for Delegate was then proceeded pro-ceeded with Mr Jennings that the voting be done by ballot Carried Mr King moved that nominations be made from the body of the house Carried Mr J Jennings of Salt Lake county placed in nomination the name of Hon John T Caine Several gentlemen seconded the nomination The President Pres-ident called for remarks Mr Farr thought that its there wore no other nominations there was no pecessity of voting by ballot Mr Jennings moved that Mr Caine be elected by acclamation acclama-tion S tionMr F S Richards Mr Chairman I had the honor in this convention two years ago of placing in nomination the name of Hon John T Caine In making that nomination I felt assured that the gentleman would amply fulfill the trust we reposed in him Two years have elapsed In that time I have been with Mr Caine at the seat of government govern-ment and I know for myself what his manner was of performing the duties devolving upon him Before his name t is put today I desire to say that I can point with pride to the record he has j made and I think the least we can do to show our appreciation and our gratitude I is to elect him by acclamation as it is proposed to do Applause THE CHAIR ANAll in favor of the nomination of Hon John T Caine will say ave The vhole assembly shouted aye THE CHAIRMAN The nomination is unanimous Hon John T Caine will be the Peoples nominee to the Forty ninth Congress upon the platform we have adopted ME KINGI move that a committee of five be appointed to inform the honorable hon-orable gentleman of his nomination Carried i The Chair thereupon appointed the following named gentlemen Mr King Mr Richards Mr Cluff Mr Campbell and Mr Page It having been found that Mr Cluff was not a member of the convention I the name of Mr Boyden was substituted substi-tuted Mr Farr moved that the appointment of the Territorial central committee be proceeded with by counties nomination here returned re-turned escorting the gentleman in question He was received with applause ap-plause and in a brief but eloquent speech returned his thanks to the convention con-vention for this renewed evidence of the confidence of the People of Utah The convention then adjourned sine die |
