Show THE REV DR BACON whose recent re-cent article in the Princeton Reviiw on polygamy in New England created cre-ated so much sensation and discus the sion seems bent on carrying matter beyond the magazines into the churches It is possible the reverend gentleman has undertaken too much for one of his years but from the encouragement he is receiving re-ceiving it is probable he will accomplish ac-complish some good if nut all that he desires The Connecticut Congregationalists Con-gregationalists met the other day when Dr Bacon moved an amendment amend-ment to a message of fraternal greeting to the Congregational Conference Con-ference in Maine His amendment invited their cooperation in cleansing cleans-ing the churches and ministry from all fellowship and complicity with the prevailing sin rebuked by our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew xix It is credibly regarded says the doctors amendment that you are holding in fellowship one who is openly disobedient to the law of Christ to the reproach of the church and gospel He spoke upon the amendment and said he would not fellowship with a body which tolerates the foul sin in one of its prominent members who has I put away his wife without scriptural scrip-tural reasons and did it too to advance ad-vance his pecuniary interests The amendment was rejected by a vote of 40 to 24 The Detroit Free Press commenting on the matter says We do not see how it could be otherwise If Dr Bacon was right i in his article on New England polygamy it is an impertinence for Connecticut people to rebuke the citizens of Maine just as it is impertinent im-pertinent in the Maine people to rebuke re-buke those of Utah When everybody every-body is living in a house full of windows and large plate glass I through which the public can see all that goes on inside it is far from profitable for the owner of that house to be chucking stones of rebuke re-buke and criticism at his neighbors transparent habitations I |
