Show CATTLE LTBIEVES How the War Goes Geo Stuntz Killed During the last session of the Legislature an attempt was made to pass some measure furnishing the necessary means and authorizing authoriz-ing the cleaning out of cattle thieves cowboys and desperadoes in general who have infested the southeastern part of the territory for some time and who have been running the country about as pleased them best For some unknown un-known reason the matter though meriting attention and ac ion fell through A few days ago a report was telegraphed tele-graphed here that a man named J F Brink a Utah sheriff and some brother Colorado officers had been killed by cattle thieves in Colorado Brink is deputy sheriff of Sevier County and did go after the cattle thieves The territory not taking any action in the matter and Brink being a heavy stockowner and haying hay-ing lost largely by the depredations of thieves set out on a tour of inspection in-spection He started out as a detective detec-tive intending to locate the thieves and then return and have them captured cap-tured He had not been gone long however as the story goes before he found some fifty head of his own cattle which had been stolen and was obliged to make himself known in order to secure them He also learned that twenty head of his cattle had been sold to a butcher on the other side of the Colorado line by George Stuntz and his partner named Bangs Brink ran across Baugs made him give a note for the amount of the cattle stolen and an order on the butcher to whom Bangs had sold tbemfor the money and with the help of Colorado officials offi-cials he started in to help clean the mob out The next heard of him was contained in the telegraphic dispatch which reported him killed In the meantime Sheriff Join W Turner had been commissioned a United States deputy marshalanc was authorized by the governor togo to-go out with a posse and help to clean out the desperadoes Sheriffs Tamer and Clark started out and the day aftertheir departure Brinks death was telegraphed On Wednesday S CEwing Esq proprietor of the Clift House received re-ceived the followmg dispatches from Gunnison Colorado dated May 3 News from near Grand Junction received re-ceived last night and dated May 1st says that Brink is ill right Stuntz is killed and three more of the gang are reported killed Sheriffs posse on trail J W TURNER The second dispatch is from Chas Rickets to whom Mr Ewing telegraphed tele-graphed for information and is as follows There is no doubt but Sheriff Brink is all right and only slightly wounded in the arm This information will be very gratifying The Stuntz referred tin t-in the dispatch Sheriff Turner is an individual well known in this country as a sneaking hound a betrayer be-trayer of confidence a cattle thief and a cutthroat and the announcement announce-ment of his death will be received with acclamations of delight Further Fur-ther news from the seat of the war will be awaited with anxiety |
