Show An Accident Mayor Little met with an accident acci-dent on Monday evening which from the fact that it resulted in no bodily injury to him may be considered con-sidered almost miraculous It was about dusk and the Mayor alone in a single buggy was driving at a pretty good speed along Fifth South street between Third and Fourth East About midway along the block near the residence of John L Maxwell nurseryman the road j makes a slight curve and runs close to the ditch on the north It was here and while endeavoring to pass a team and wagon going in the opposite op-posite direction that the Mayors horsea highspirited animaltook fright at a pile of cobble in the road near by and made A quick shywhieli resulted in the collision of the two vehicles The buggy being the lighter of the two was thrown over and the Mayor was thrown to the ground but with great presence t > f mind and with a grip that would do credit to a blacksmith he held onto on-to the reins and at length succeeded in pulling the animal to dead halt within a hundred yards of where he originally fell The man in the wagon stopped his team a moment and looked back but immediately afterward drove hurriedly away apparently fearful of recognition and a suit for damages While no blame can be attached to the man in the affair it being purely an accident acci-dent his action in driving away and leaving a person alone in so critical a plight cannot be too severely censured cen-sured As it happened the Mayor escaped uninjured but the man in the wagon had no assurance at the time that the person whom he saw I thrown from a buggy and dragged along at the mercy of a frenzied horsehad not broken a limb or been otherwise seriously injured The buggy was badly demolished the front wheel on the left side the first thing that struck being shattered into a thousandpieces The Mayor is to be congratulated upon his for tunate escape |
